7 mpg on my 1st gen ... normal?

I have a 6 inch lifted, arb locked, 35's, geared to 4:56 1st gen explorer. It has a hyper-chip, intake and magnaflow exhaust.

My problem is that I get average 7 miles to the gallon.

What kind of gas milage are you guys getting and what can I do to get better mileage? Is it my chip that is causing the bad milage?

Definitely not normal.

I get 17 MPG around town, 21 HWY with my 4.0L Ranger (stickshift).

If you have an auto, I'm thinking 2-3 MPG or so less than that would still be normal.

Not familiar with the chip (I don't run one), although I think your axle gear ratio might be a small part of it as well (should have 4.88 for 35s).

Its got a ton of power and there is no gas smell (as in it is leaking). It is not blowing out black/blue/white or any kind of smoke. I am not sure that 4:88 gears are needed for 35" tires maybe if I was running 37's

Maybe FPR--Fuel Pressure Regulator? Do you smell gas outside your vehicle when you shut the vehicle off after driving?

...My 91 has 6" susp, 3" body lift, 35's,4.56, etc. and I get a steady 14.5 mpg in town and 16 plus hwy...

...With an auto tranny the only thing you can change now is your amount of right foot....With a stick you can greatly change your fuel economy by changing your shifts at rpm...

No, 4.56s isn't enough for 35s, but that wouldn't be the cause of 7MPG, pull codes.

I did not build the truck from the ground up. I put the front ARB locker and tranny in. I did not mess with the shift points.

DOES ANYONE HAVE THE HYPERCHIP? (part no: 625711) do you like it? what happened when you put it in?
Acording to my GPS my speedo is 5mph off. Its not a big deal. I calculated the distance traveled divided by the gallons of gas put back in my tank. I have never smelled gas on the car (before/during/after operation) I have a code reader in my desk next to me. I will read the codes.

I don't daily drive this it only goes to the trails but it is crazy having to carry extra fuel if we were going to be going on a long trip.

For information sake what gears would you guys say to run with 37" tires and why. Just curious not trying to be "smart"

Speedometers and odometers aren't off by "X" MPH, they're off by a percentage and it's certainly messing with your mileage a bit.

And 5.13s definitely for 37s, unfortunately at the current time, 5.13s aren't being made for the D35.

im having the same issue however i do not have a chip i am going to be puting a smoke machine on mine the next time i get it out and see if i have a intake leak or any thing like that. however i have 4:10's and 33's

4x4ing involves a lot of going nowhere very slowly at great expense.

Including gas.

But it still seems low to me.

I would go along with the Fuel Pressure Regulator being bad. That's usually the culprit when fuel economy gets as bad as you say.

My lifted Explorer with 4:88s gets about 18mpg with 36s.

agree, fuel pressure regulator. My 88 BII mpg dropped from around 25 to around 15, i smelled gas, pulled the vac line off the regulator and GAS POURED OUT of the vac line!!! Replaced it and was back to around 25.

Nope..it runs on vacuum. Pull the vacuum line off the FPR. If gas is present in the vacuum line, the FPR is shot.

i dont bother to do the milage reading when i off road but i used to daily drive it for about a year and never ever ever got better than 11 and that was on a road trip on the highway. im going to be checking many things when it gets warm enough to do stuff around here (thats if i dont get my money together for my v8 swap first)

For a while, I was getting about that mileage in my '91 4dr stick. It started right after a tune up which really got me miffed. After a little bit of poking about under the bonnet, I realized I forgot to plug the MAF back in! So it was essentially running in "limp mode".
