Working on "Bliss Dance." From the artist, Marko Cochrane: I've worked on “Bliss Dance” every day since last year's Burning Man. It's composed of 55,000 welds, mostly done by hand. It's 40 feet tall, weighs 7,000 pounds and is 97% air. The design is based around the structures of geodesic domes, and 4,500 of the ball joints are threaded to attach the steel mesh “skin” with screws. I used to do a lot of scale enlarging professionally, the original sculpture this was based on was 13 inches. I then made a 4 foot version and then this final 40 foot sculpture. It is supported by six I-beams buried 2 feet under the surface in a radial pattern." (TS)

I'm back. And almost all the gear and costumes have been cleaned of their playa dust and have been put away for next year. So I finally ave a littel time to post some links to some pics (damned flickr).
Here we are parked at night at the Department of Mutant Vehicles. I think this is sort of the area that the web cam showed.

Here we are on the Playa during the day. We're actually broken down at this point. The thermostat housing developed a few holes and we lost most of our coolant. I managed to fix it later that day with epoxy. It was a ***** working inside the carton. As you'll see in the next photo.

Inside the carton area. You can still see the windshield, hood and fenders. Even the windshield wipers are still there! There are over 4000 holes drilled in the carton each with an LED light poking through.

This is the front chain that comes down from the new driving position up in the carton.

These pictures show the chain that runs to the gear on the back of the original steering wheel. The wheel is now hidden in a box covered in fur.

F!! that's so awesome times 20.

Yup, very awesome!
I like the pic (in the link) of the bowl filled of cereal pillows.

So you started this thread wondering about the weight of the project, and how you can beef up the Ex's suspension. Did it all hold up?

damn, you burning-man people are obcessed.

everyone i know who goes to burning man, all year long, its their favorite thing to talk about, and they spend tons of money/time on their project for burning man.

i suppose i'll have to go one of these times.. maybe i'll make my X into an art car too.. nah (but i do have 2 junk trucks that are perfect candidates)

RangerX- at one point. For a very short period of time we had about 25 people combined in the bowl and carton. It took a while to get going because I had blocked the accelerator so it would only go 5mph. But we did okay otherwise. After that we decided on a maximum of 12. Just so things didn't get too out of hand. And to prevent swaying and seasickness I put blocks of wood between the rear leafs and the frame and the bump stops and frame in front. So the suspension was largely taken out of the equation.

...Are you going again this year and will your X be the same or different?

...I heard BLM put a limit of 50,000 people and Burning Man sold out fast..

...I'm hoping to see more info on the clock..
http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Worlds-Biggest-Clock-on-Time-for-Burning-Man-126462523.html

The world's biggest time piece -- a circle 3.25 miles around and 1 mile in diameter, powered by lasers -- is the latest ambitious project by veteran Burner Jim Bowers, who built a giant project called "Eyes of Gawd" for last year's festival.

We're not bringing it this year. Taking a break. Actually it's for sale if you want to buy it. :D Working on this project instead. http://www.trojanhorse2011.com/ I'm in the blue shirt and gloves in the second from the bottom pic. If you care. I know some people working on the giant clock. Should be awesome. I heard 52k this year was the cap.The man burns in 32 days. The Trojan Horse in 31.

If it is in fact exactly 1 mile across....wouldn't that make the circle 3.141592 miles around the perimeter?....and not 3.25?

If it is 3.25miles around, the clock would be just over 1 mile across....or 1.03450 miles to be exact.

Yes it would.

Look at the big brain on Ryan.

You gonna part that sucker out or just junk it?

Trying to sell it as a whole. What you don't need a giant carton of milk and bowl of cereal?

Awesome Man! Has it sold? $4500 seems like a shame... but hey it's not like you can leave it in an art gallery... though it deserves one.

That gives me an idea... Burning Man Museum...
