1992 Ford Explorer XLT
Whats up guys its me again. I plan on towing more stuff this upcomming season so I wanted to give my tranny a rehaul. I bought a much bigger transcooler for the 92 explorer 4x4 xlt. I also bought a new filter and a ton of trans fluid. I want to put this trans cooler on and then do a Purge of all the old tranny fluid and put in a new filter. I wanta make sure first off that what im looking at IS THE TRANS COOLER. Second After I connect it I wanta do a purge, I heard the best way to do is is leave the return line feeding into a bucket and just keep adding fluid until its done? Which one is the return . give me some heads up Im so confused.

FIRST picture, (IS THIS THE TRANS COOLER?)

NEXT PICTURE ( HERE IS THE BOTTOM WHICH ONE IS THE RETURN WHICH IS THE FEED?) The brown one goes back to the tranny, the oily one goes up to somewhere in the engine bay?

LAST PICTURE Compares the size of the two coolers

It doesn't matter.

Just the person I was waiting for Aldive. I saw all your posts on the trans cooler stuff.

Is this the trans cooler? Which line is return and feed?

yes that pic is the tranny cooler.....

not sure which side is which..... also if doing all of this, might wnat to also change out the filter in the pan as well for that extra bit of protection... yes it will use up another few qts of fluid, but that extra insurance is worth it to me....

I bought a new filter. But what do I need to do to flush the system?

you should add an aux trans filter while you are doing all this. Increase system fluid capacity and helps to make sure your fluid is staying clean. Easy to change the aux tranny filter when you do your regular oil changes.

Best way to figure out which line is which is to take a line off, put baggies over the two ends, crank the engine over just long enough for some fluid to move. One bad should be full of trans fluid, the other will basicaly be empty. thus you can tell which way the fluid is flowing.

If you can trace your lines it should run from the trans, to the cooler in the radiator, to the aux cooler, and then back to the trans.

I think the one going up into the engine bay is the fluid comming from the tranny. Take the one going to the tranny and run it into the new cooler and then at the other end of the cooler run that one onto the matal part leading back to the cooler. Hope that helps. I just did did an extra cooler on mine and I love it.

I dont know which does which, i presume the one to the transmission is the return line, since the cooler is best to be on the return line.. correct me if im wrong.

Also i have two coolers, all i would do is hook them up to the hose the same way as the original one.

Yes. I was a little hesitant to push the plastic rods between the fins of my radiator but that was the best way to mount it.

I don't know about Brandons.

I just used another factory cooler i had on the parts explorer and threw it on, right beside the original and used the top mount bracked on the mount at the front grill for it. And then i think i drilled a hole for the other bracked. This setup has worked absolutely perfect. It even went in completely flush. The tubing of course is the easy part to figure out..

this picture may help alot better then the previous one.. if anyones interested i can get some new ones..

wow thats a cool setup for the stock ones

i think i'm gonna get a slightly larger one and use the plastic rods that come with it like Albino's setup.

I went with the fan cause I tow a 19' Searay in stop and go traffic. I opted to turn it on and off myself, in case I get in deep water, I don't want that fan coming on trying to push mudd water through.

The switch is mounted on the A pillar with the tranny temp guage

I am curious about the pillar pod..... never seen one billed as fitting a 1st Gen..... I have a 92, where did you get yours... (or am I wrong assuming the 92 and 94 are the same?)

I am also interested in that gauge that you have mounted there, is there an online store somewhere that has it?
