Any one have any ideas, today while driving down the road in 5th, it shuddered and I lost it, along with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and reverse in the transmission. 4th works fine and got me home. Feels good shifting and nothing missing under the shifter and the rails under cap. A little noise in 2nd and that is it? any help apreciated, has 116000 mile and uses oil like a sieve, is it worth fixing?

I agree- make sure nothing came undone under there.

Jesse made it home... :D

I 'd say you are going to be making a trip to the junkyard for a trans. Its possible a bearing went out and the gears are not meshing anymore. Only a teardown will tell you.

Thats crazy that you lost them all like that. If it was just one or two, i'd say syncros are to blame. But since you lost so many gears at once, I'd bet a bearing or a broken shaft is to blame.

Yes, I guess I need to drop the trans out and dissasemble, It is nothing simple as i can see by inspection

And the first thing i did was get on here. lol

After re-reading the first post, i agree that something may have come apart inside the trans.

Same thing was wrong with mine when I bought it, the rubber plugs at the top had leaked all the oil out.

I think rubber was probably not the best material for this purpose.

Nod, had the same problem with my 89 ranger, the 5 speed should be the Timken trans, The rear retainer plate let go which lets the counter shaft fall away from the main shaft. Its rebuild-able, and you usually end up with a rock solid trans when your done, as long as you did not tear too much up when it let go. Problem is that it will take at least a week to get the parts to rebuild it, longer if you find out you broke something thats not in the rebuild kit. You may be able to source a transmission from a salvage yard for a hundred or so if you do some talking.

Link here for rebuild parts, best part is it gives you a list of vehicles that you can pull a transmission from.

I have rebuilt that transmission 3 different times. 2x I rebuilt the same trans...I gave up and swapped in a V8.....

It is a M5OD-R1 = Mazda 5 Speed Overdrive.

Good luck!

The reason u still have 4th gear is that the output shaft is locked to the input shaft in 4th gear. You have sheared off the counter shaft. U can rebuild it yourself if you just pay attention to how it comes apart..I have rebuilt dozens of transmissioand transfer cases and the m5r1 is among the simplest. If u decide to rebuild it yourself I. Have a service manual that you can download to help you out.
