Hello,

I own a '93 Explorer Sport currently with a 3" body lift from Performance Accesories and on 31" ProComp Mud-Terrains. This is a 2WD vehichle. I am anxious to do a big build up on this vehicle. I am very attached to it and am willing to put a lot of work into it. I realize that to do serious off-roading I will need to do a 4WD conversion. I have read about a person who has actually done this before and posted his project on this site. I have also been looking at a 6" Superlift lift kit for the Explorer. I would eventually like to make it into a rock crawler. For now, I am just looking to build it up so that it will dominate on off-road terrain. I was posting this thread to see if anyone would be nice enough to offer ANY advice about building up an Explorer big time. I would appreciate any stories, advice, or general comments on this project.

Thank you.

do it right the first time man. it will save you a lot in the long run. find a dana 44 front and a 9" rear and depending on your tire size you can match a ratio to that tire size. if you check out ahhjawws truck you will see what he has done. he went from a 3" body lift to a dana 44 and 9" rear, 4.56 gears, arb locker, and 35" tires. his are from a mid 70's bronco with disc brakes. check that out. i myself did a big loop to where i'm at now. i started with the superlift, now i'm doing a dana 30 with leaf springs. for now the dana 30 will suit me. my next vehicle WILL have a dana 44 and a 9" rear done by myself.

Big does not exactly = Dominate off road terrain.

Traction = dominate terrain

traction = articulation (keep tires on the groud)

Since you are starting with a 2wd Gen I sport you will want to do a solid axle swap in the front. If you are going to run 35"+ tires go with a dana 44.
You can keep the rear 8.8 axle and use adapters to match the dana 44 wheel bolt circle (cheaper)

Now there is PLENTY of solid axle swap info on this board that will help with that.
You will want to get a transfer case, you have a couple of options, Borg Warner 1354 manual shift, or Atlas II ($$$$)

You will need to adapt your transmission to accept the new T case.

This is ALOT of work.
You may have additional projects along the way as well, everything from new coil buckets, to driveshafts, etc...

The SKY IS THE LIMIT
and the height of the limit is determined by $$$$ and effort, mostly $$$ if you dont do the work :)

Welcome and the SEARCH button is your new best friend :)
