95-01 your thoughts

I din't hear anything and you din't read what i wrote.

I didn't reply to you. Look at the ORIGINAL POSTER who started this thread. I'm replying to him.

I believe celly was talking to the original poster, since nobody else really answered his question...

Yeah, what he said.

well now you learned to quote

Why do you think my original comment was even directed at you? It's not even your thread! Everyone else in this thread seemed to get it. Way to hijack the thread and think we're replying to you.
I think I understand how this and other forums work. Nice work, newbie. :thumbdwn:

Actualy what i did was a missunderstanding from you failing to quote, what we're doing now is hijacking. Also what you're doing is flaming so

There was no need to quote if you actually read the thread, but I will just for you Xan.

I have heard that sohc 4.0 explorer is not very responsive to upgrades but i wanted to start this thread to see what everyone else thinks or has done to their own.

which upgrades have you tried that showed the best results? Power, torque, pros cons etc.

SOHC is VERY responsive to upgrades. You heard wrong.

It was pretty clear that celly was replying to the original poster since he did pretty much quote cstanton.

Any more lameness from anyone, and the thread will get deleted. Get to the topic, which celly was the only one that did so far...

Back to topic, I've owned two different Explorer Sports with SOHC. Pretty gutsy engine as is. I only modded one of them. Volant air intake, free flowing aftermarket exhaust (Flowmaster muffler/new pipes from cats back) and then utilized custom tuning via a SCT Flasher. Made a world of difference. Much more aggressive shiftpoints and much more responsive.

I've done the same things to my current ride (V8 equipped Eddie). I feel that the SOHC and V8 are very similar at the high end, but V8 definitely rules in the lower end. Hard to compare apples to apples because I had different rear differentials (sorry, can't remember which is which right now).

The SOHC is a very capable performer. As much as I love the feel and sound of the 5.0 better, I much preferred the mileage on the SOHC.

You can't go wrong with either engine, IMHO. Remember that with V8, you're stuck with full time AWD or 2WD while SOHC, you only get Control Trac 4WD (switchable) and can do the brown wire mod to get true RWD. Can't do the same with V8. I don't wheel so I was happy with full time AWD. My Eddie sticks to the road well, especially with upgrade to Bilstein shocks and EE rear swaybar. Now I am digressing.

I'll be looking for your future posts in the transmission section. LOL:rolleyes:

I am running a b&m shift kit and amsoil atf... and the trans temp never went over 185.... call me crazy but i think my ex can run with the semi;s

lol

w/e, good luck with that. Temp doesn't have anything to do with stress fractures, drive shaft, u-joints or your ham.

Some of the SOHC 4.0 4x4s (like my '01 Sport) came with a switchable 2hi/4hi/4lo transfer case. No need for the brown wire mod, just turn the knob to choose RWD or 4WD.

On topic of performance...My truck really woke up with the Gibson exhaust, Volant CAI, and XCal2.

Next on my mod wish list is front and rear 4.56 gears. The 32" tires slowed me down a little and I want to get some low end accelleration back. Plus I want to get 33s next time I need tires.

IIRC, your Sport and the Sport Tracs are the only 2nd gens that have the 2hi/4high/4low option. For all intents and purposes, the rest of the 2nd gen 4x4s are all either AWD or control-trac auto 4wd.

So my truck, which says 4wd auto....is really AWD??

No that is the 4WD AUTO control trac so it is semilar to AWD but you can have 4 auto, 4 hi, 4lo where as AWD is not switchable at all...

Uuuuh, no. I thought I was pretty clear:

Is yours a 2001 sport or sport trac? No.

I never said AWD was the same as the control-trac automatic 4wd.

You know..there is no reason for you to be ****y......

I have never had a truck that had 4wd "auto" i don't know what it is, and the way you made it sound, is that it's like AWD.

What does your 4wd shift knob say? Maybe there's a fourth exception to the rule on a 96 Sport that I haven't seen... anything's possible.

so which mods would you do first with a college kid budget? brand matter?

Shift knob?? or dial? lol.....

2wd.....4wd auto.....4wd low

That would be the Control Trac Automatic 4 wheel drive, just like I mentioned before.

I re-read my post, and I can see how you could be confused by it. I sometimes forget not everyone understands that AWD is not the same as the Control Trac automatic 4wd. They're two completely different systems.

So what's the difference, and how good of a 4wd system do i have?

The AWD has a 50-50 ratio for the transfer differential case for front and back driving capability. the 4WD has a 2.48:1 ratio for the transfer case, or 40:60 ratio, 40 for the front and 60 for the back, this is power distribution to the wheels, and the 4WD system is on demand, which means you can activated it whenever you feel like it. The AWD system, you have no choice it is always activated.

Mkrucejr you would have the 4WD system and not the AWD system on your 96 sport.
