I have heard that sohc 4.0 explorer is not very responsive to upgrades but i wanted to start this thread to see what everyone else thinks or has done to their own.

which upgrades have you tried that showed the best results? Power, torque, pros cons etc.

the sohc motor is a very efficient motor... and quicker than the v8.... umm it is very capable of civic like mileage... do a search for quest for 30

i have gotten 32mpg with my ex and its a 4x4 with allterain ta;s

Quicker then the V8... right

I guess this is a real noob question......how do you know what engine yuou have? I know mine is a v6, but thats all i know.

stock in regards of 0-60 times it is

ok, but with a programmer on both trucks the V8 is faster. horray? my buddy had the sohc and i put mine aginst his both stock both autos and i was way faster. maybe brand new but i'm gonna guess the sohc motor doesn't wear as good over the years

I am not sure about with a programmer on both engines, but when you match a SOHC to a 5.OL, the SOHC has a faster 0-60 time as said before and a faster quater mile time when cars are similar weight. I have owned both a SOHC with 130,x.. miles and a 5.OL with 95,x... I am yet to do anything performance to the 5.0L but with the SOHC I added a Volant CAI and droped the muffler for a week or two...but I feel that both of those had a pretty decent out come, but I don't have any timeslips or dyno numbers so it may just be a placebo effect...ethier way the SOHC is a decent motor none the less but I would still rather have my V8.

Slap 6000# on your ball hitch and see who gets to 60 quicker...

oh wait, you can't tow 6000# with a V6 LOL

lol thats why I would rather have my 5.0l but if I might have to go to 6.4L F450 to tow 24,000 (if the motors weren't melting down EKKK!)

I hear ya, but i'm also gonna say that i've found in the past when you do things to a v8 you get more out of it then a v6 due to having 2 more cylinders. just a thought

Well hopefully I can confirm that soon, can't wait for exhaust

SOHC is VERY responsive to upgrades. You heard wrong.

i towed 7500# with my sohc at 67mph for 350mi without the slightest trouble

Thats very unsafe and abusive to the drivetrain.

The cam and transmission programming hold back a stock 302.

You have OHV. SOHC didn't come into play until the '97 model year and it's real obvious. Pop the hood and it says "SOHC" on the plastic engine cover. Not applicable since you've got a '96.

+1! The SOHC is a very efficient motor and very responsive to mods. Anyone stating it doesn't respond well just doesn't have a clue. My truck will run with most modded v-8's and I have raced a few supercharged stangs and camaros with victory my way a few and their way a few. If you are looking for parts. Please feel free to contact me. Thanks-jh

I din't hear anything and you din't read what i wrote.

I believe celly was talking to the original poster, since nobody else really answered his question...

probabally some of the best things to gain from the sohc is just to make it more efficient... synthetic fluids, cold air intake, exhaust, electric fan, underdrive pullys, computer tune... that kind of stuff... you can supercharge them but because of their high compression you cant add a whole lot of boost.
