any help with this wife took explorer to work the other day and it wouldnt start turned over but no fire then it started ran for a day or two then same thing she called RAA roadside assistance they had a quick look and said it was the coil pack (no spark) so had car towed home replaced coil and still no spark also no fuel smell when cranking engine over they recon it relates to the coil ?
anyway anyone know how to fix or what could be problem thanks robert

Check to make sure there's fuel getting to at least the frame rail. I'm not sure which engine you have but most engines have a schrader valve somewhere on the fuel rail right before the injectors. Uncap this valve and fuel should at least leak out, if not squirt out, of this valve. If there is no fuel, then check to see if you hear a faint hum or buzz inside the fuel tank on KOEF (key on, engine off). If you dont, then the fuel pump might have died.

Are you getting spark now??

If so then the problem is most likely a fuelling issue, Do the above^^ Or Hit it with a sensible dose of “Start ya basted” down the intake tube wile somebody is cracking it over and if it fires up and then stops once you stop spraying you have a fuelling issue

Cheers.

if you are not getting spark or fuel, good chance that its the PCM relay or a fuse related to it. Since it did it a "couple of times" and fuses don't "heal" themselves, my guess is a relay.

sorry for the delay in getting back and saying thanks for the advice guys comp crashed big time anyway replaced the coil pack got a filter to replace but never come across the fitting on the filter before like a quick release connection (but then you know what im talking about) cant get it of fuel in old filter is dirty so will back flush tank and reuse old filter and get local repairer to change hopefully they have whatever tool is needed did check spark and looks like its still not there have tried swapping relays around and hasnt made any difference but so far thats as far as i have got fuel pump works as i can hear it hopefully will get some time over weekend to play around somemore again thanks for the input :thumbsup:
robert

put filter back on dont know what pressure fuel im getting but fuel flow seems good still not getting spark

since you did the pack and it didn't help, likely next area perhaps is the CPS sensor as this is the "thing" that provides a "signal" to tell the PCM to "fire" the pack.

thanks budwich
dont want to sound ignorant but where is the cps sensor located on the explorer
also checked the coil pack that i removed and it had around 13ohms across all three coils so im geussing that it wasnt the coil

CPS is on the passenger side of the front crank dampner. Use an OEM one.

any chance you can describe what it looks like also found a bank of relays behind the battery do you know what they cover thanks robert

Which engine do you have? the 4.0L or the 5.0L?

Camshaft position sensor (CPS):

I think what was referred to was the Crankshaft position sensor. It triggers the spark--
It is located on the passenger side of block, behind the crank pulley

I think what was referred to was the Crankshaft position sensor. It triggers the spark
I was thinking the same thing too but I kept hearing CPS (camshaft position sensor) and not CKP.

I was thinking the same thing too but I thought thats commonly refered to as the CKP sensor.

yeah-you are correct--

cps =cam sensor
CKP= crank sensor

cam sensor triggers fuel injectors
crank sensor triggers ignition

At any rate, this is what the sensor looks like:

And as stated, its on the passenger's side of the crank's pulley.

I have an old 96 harness with one in it in my garage. You could have the sensor-but shipping it down under there would be expensive I bet--

happy

hey hey its alive threw me withe the cps know it as knock sensor and that it was on the passenger side (DUH!) realised that to americans our drivers side is your passenger side so anyway unpluged unit had wife crank engine over a couple times reconnected and it fired up again and again so so much for the so called mechanics from RAA who said it was the coil pack but to all i really appreciate the help and support thanks guys robert:exp: :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

sorry for the confusion on the "CPS"... I knew I "wanted" the crankshaft position sensor (as indicated by the "ignition signal") but was too "internetted" to type out the abbrev. Glad you "fixed" it. You still want to consider replacing it in the future if your problem returns as it sounds like it might be marginal or the connection there to it.

Its running again! Way to go!
Hehe, I forgot you have a right-handed vehicle.
