I have a 1998 5.0 AWD Mercury Mountaineer that will go into reverse, but will not go into drive. I recently had an engine swap completed, and following driving it after that for a couple of weeks with a leaking radiator, I swapped in a new radiator as well. It drove for a couple of weeks after that, with drive being slow to engage, but shifting to 2nd, 3rd, and on with no apparent difficulty. Eventually drive would not engage at a gas station, and I drove in reverse to the top of a hill near my house, where I cruised to a speed where it shifted into second and drove fine until I had to come to a stop, at which point I drove the rest of the way home in reverse. I initially feared that I may not have replaced enough tranny fluid after the radiator swap, but have since topped it off to no effect. Any ideas? I really don't want to spend another $500 - $700 on a tranny swap.

IS it possible the shift cable was damaged when you swapped the engine? Maybe the shift position sensor is loose-or the rod not attached properly?
