hey guys,

For a few days now my 98' Explorer's car alarm has been going off, and not stopping when I click unlock, or start the engine. All the normal routines (even listed in the manual) do not stop the car alarm. It stays on when I am driving or parked, with engine turned on or off. The horn is blaring and the lights flash. The only way to stop it from making that God-awful noise is to disconnect the battery.

I took it to the mechanic and he disabled my horn so it doesn't make a noise anymore, but the lights still flash thus draining my battery when the engine is turned off. So the alarm is still on it just doesn't honk anymore.

I have looked for the last week online to find an explanation and am reluctant to go to a specialized Ford mechanic yet (because of $). I can't find anyone with my same problem so I'm begging for help now.

Anyone have any ideas? Would be great.

Hi there , my 99 doesn't have a OEM alarm , but just a thought and I'm not sure if it may help , but try to take the fuse/relay for the alarm off , not sure if it will allow you to start the car or not ! there should be also a way to put it on stand by mode ! hopes this helps :-)

My '97 has the factory alarm (blows the horn, not sure about flashing lights) though '98 was then first year for PATS so I'm quite sure a '99 would have the same PATS passive anti-theft system as a 2000-2001.

Thanks much guys. Unfortunately the mechanic said that he could disconnect the fuse for the alarm system, but because the alarm system and the electric locks on the car doors and in my keys are connected, they would be unusable. And electric buttons to lock and unlock the car are pretty helpful, although I greatly considered just getting rid of it all.

I did however disconnect the horn from the alarm system so there is no more noise but the problem isn't solved yet. The guy at the shop didn't seem to know exactly what he was doing, and I even tried replacing the battery but it did nothing.

I can't think of anything else to do..... has anyone seen this problem before?

Wonders is the panic button on your FOB is flaking in and out causing the issue. It could be the fob sending a panic signal on it's own, :dunno:

Have you tried removing the fob battery, see if the car will make it over night with the alarm set?

also, you might try resetting the fob security code.

switch the key on and off 8 times and the doors should lock. If not, Repeat the key on and off 8 times until you do hear the door locks energize. Then hit the lock button on your fob. The locks should respond showing the fob was reset.
