ok..... so I've been offered a 99 V8 XLT for $650... apparently 2 of the lifters on the passenger bank have snapped and now it sounds like a bag of nails.

Is it worth getting? could there be much damage or is it one to steer clear of?

it's got 230000kms on it...

Probably not worth looking at unless you have a lot of time - broken lifters usually means something else up top went catastrophic.

I've got time.... I was just thinking of a cheap V8 swap for my sport... and with that many miles on it anyway, I was probably gonna take the heads off, re-do all the seals n stuff. It's an 8hr drive to go see it and I'm waiting for the guy to send pics and and engineer report of what it needs.

I wouldn't buy it, considering its 8 hrs away (factor in the cost of getting it from there to home).

most 99 V8's are gonna cost me 2-3 times what this one will cost... however, I'm waiting on pictures, it's only an XLT and I really wanted a limited... for the leather, centre console, etac etc...

I'll wait to see what he comes up with... and report back... Thanks IZ...

i don't think you should buy it. really, i don't. if you choose this option, just give me the info that you have to date about said truck, and i will break the news to the guy that owns it :D

I'd tell the guy to keep the truck. Personally, I wouldn't drive 8 hrs for an exploder with one of those junk ass V8's and 2 broken lifters..especially with 230,000km. Odds are you're going to run into more repairs than you bargained for. IZwack is right, broken lifters usually means there's more to it than just broken lifters. Dropping a V8 into a sport would be cool, but in my opinion I think you're gonna end up wasting alot of time and $$.

Where do you get the 5.0 is a junk ass engine? The 5.0 will outlast your SOHC 2 or 3 to one and is not problematic like your SOHC. I have 230k miles on my 5.0 and have ZERO issues.

You'd better get your **** together before you go ripping on a 5.0

I agree that the v8 is more dependable than the v6 flavors. So if it was a running v8, then it would definitely be worth the money and the 16 hr drive (back and forth). But IMO, the two broken lifters is probably just the tip the iceberg of a bigger problem (damaged camshaft lobes?). 8 hrs for me is like from DC to the border of Michigan - thats a far drive for a risky engine.

OK
the roller lifters have nylon "guides" which keep the lifter oriented inside the engine.
If the lifter gets sideways, (which is what happened) the now sideways roller will scrape off the cam surface. This hardened surface material is now all over the inside of the engine, making it junk.

Sorry Simon. But I can get you a complete 97 v8 drive train for 300.00 .

ANY motor can last 230k if you keep up on routine maintenance. If I gave 2 ***** about my SOHC from day one I guarantee could get 230k out of that motor too, but I'm not planning on keeping my Ex much longer. As for the 5.0 I've driven a few of them at the car auction where I work as well as some SOHC's and just from my experience I can say those 5.0's are slow, yet strong a little more torquey. I guess what I should have said was I wouldn't buy a V8 explorer for the fact that they're slower and also AWD instead of 4WD with low range like I have with my SOHC. In my opinion it all depends on what you buy your Ex for that determines which one's are favorable and which one's are "junk." I go offroad with mine so obviously my preference is the SOHC. But I've raced my bone stock V6 against a couple 5.0s and beat all of them, not by alot but still. The big upside to the 5.0 is the tranny it comes with. Perhaps you could elaborate on the problems I should be having with my SOHC? Because right now it's all good.

Lets not get into the v6 vs v8 engines... this is about whether a 16 hr drive and $650 adventure is worth the price.

Agreed.

With my V6 bias aside, I still wouldn't buy that truck. When you take into consideration all the possible damage to the motor it doesn't seem worth it. But again, that's just my opinion. I would, however, like to see a V8 sport..that would be badass. If you got the $$ and time to blow and you're really dedicated to it then by all means go for it.

What country is that in? If it's England, $650. is probably what is costs to fill the tank a few times.

see, my sport is a 99, so I'm thinking that this will have the compatible wiring, etc, plus it's a complete vehicle. I won't be using the transfer case, I'm gonna be putting in a 4406 with either an elec shift or a manual shift. so I'm only really interested in the engine, transmission and all the associated wiring. If I came down to John's for the engine and power train, I'd need a flat deck and get raped coming through customs. I was thinking about torquier cams n TMH's anyway.. maybe I could talk him down some more? what do you guys think that it's worth? He said he's changed the oil every 5000 kms and that everything else is perfect. I've got approx 3 weeks before the guy leaves the country, so I'm still thinking as yet... I wouldn't just put it in without giving it a good going over first anyway...
