I have a 94 explorer with 31's and i would like to determine what my real gear ratio is the x was owned by a junkyard owner and it was rumored that he changed the ratio from 3.27 to a 3.73 locker how do I determine what my real ratio is?

It might not work since you said he might have changed the gears.

Axle codes on the inside door panel

41 - 3.27 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
45 - 3.55 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
46 - 3.73 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
42 - 4.10 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D1 - 3.27 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D4 - 3.73 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D2 - 4.10 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)

The other way to look is that the ratio is stamped on the ring gear.

Sorry to thread hijack, but I just checked my door sticker and it said I have the D1 - 3.27 limited slip axle. Was this standard, or was it an optional package? Are there any downsides to having this? Will it be good for offroading?

A qiuck and dirty way to estimate your axle ratio is to jack up the rear of the rig and make a mark on the tire and a mark on the driveshaft and see how many times you need to turn the drive shaft to get the wheel to make one full revolution. Since you're unsure if the ratio is 3.27 or 3.73 you'll have to pay pretty close attention to differentiate the number of turns, but it is easier then ripping of the rear cover :)

3.27s will suck even with 31s or 32s. You're going to want to regear.

It is fine for stock tires and no lift though? I plan on doing some hard offroading, no rock climbing or anything, just taking the bumps kinda fast.

I am only 18 and I don't have any money to do any major mods.

Hard off-roading and stock tires with no lift don't belong in the same sentence. ;)

Thats why they were not put in the same sentence. :D

What about the Moab thread?

Exceptions are made for wheeling at Offroad Nirvana :D.

The biggest problem in using 3.27's and larger tires is the beating the tranny takes...it will wipe out a transmission pretty quickly in most cases.

I ran 3.27's and 33's for about 1 week before I installed my 4.56's. 0-60 times were measured in minutes..not seconds...ugh...

I dont want bigger tires because this is going to be my daily driver, and I want to squeeze all the mpg I can get out of it (when I'm not offroading it that is).

funny thing is the tranny was rebuilt in december and it sometimes feels like the tranny's slippin could be the crappy transmission comin to bite me in the a$$ again
