Hi!
I’m new to Rangers so forgive any dumb questions I may ask.
Also forgive the long history.
Last week I purchased a 1991 Ranger xlt 4.0, 4wd Automatic Trans code T.
After taking a few days to get things into shape and working properly, (tailgate, tail lights, headlights and the like. I sent my son to the store in it. When he returned, he said the engine revved up and the truck wouldn’t pull, for a while, then it began to pull again. My son is not very automobile savvy, so I took what he said with a grain of salt.
BTW I am no wizard either.
The next day I proceeded to back the truck out. It went fine in reverse, but when I put it in drive (actually OD) to go forward the vehicle shifted out of reverse and did nothing it felt like I had put it in neutral. I left it in drive for a few seconds thinking perhaps the filter was plugging up and slowing down the shift. But nothing, so I put it back in reverse. It shifted into reverse like there was nothing wrong, so I put it back in drive. Again nothing happened, not even a hint that I had put it into drive so I revved the engine up to about 1500 rpms a couple of times in short bursts, still nothing. Once more to reverse, this time it slammed into reverse a bit harshly (engine was at an Idle). But backed up just fine, so back into drive, nothing for a 5 seconds or so then it harshly shifted into drive and began to pull I put the truck in park and talked to my son for a few moments. Then I put it into drive. It shifted somewhat harshly then I drove it 7 miles to my cousin’s house (it shifted just fine) to do some more work on it. Did a little welding and other work on it then put it into drive to go home after checking the trans fluid and adding ½ quart. Nothing, so I repeated what I had done at home several times. Not even a hint that I had put it into drive.
The nest day I changed the trans filter, fluid was still red but it did smell a little burnt.
Still the same, it made no change.
I’m not too up on the electrical gizmos on the new vehicles (91 ain’t new, unless your old like me)
Is there some gadget I should know about or something else I should be aware of?
Or is the tranny junk?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
THANKs
