A4LD Swap option from Advance Adapters

So a specially built 700r4 is basically a must? It just needs to come from a 2.8. It seems my 4405 is on its way to the scrapyard. My TOD or chain is shot. So I'll need a new t case. Will any other t-cases bolt behind it, other than the 4405 and bw1354, without much modification? It's starting to look like this may be out of my price range.:(

as soon as the first unit is installed i am sure DiffWackDaddy will fill in some of the blanks for us, but from what i have seen a rebuilt 700r4 can be anywhere from $500cdn to over $4000 depending on the application and a core from a u-pull wrecker can go for as little as $75cdn, B&M offers rebuild kit's for a resonable price and there are many web sites that show detailed rebuild's of this transmission. Do some searching on google for 700r4 rebuilding from what i have seen its fairly simple and would make a good weekend project.
Then again you could just pay to have the A4LD rebuilt twice a year for $2000 a pop and see how "cost effective" that is :D Many thanks to advance adapters for this and i hope to be doing buisness with them soon.

Yeah I've been looking at 700r4's that need a light rebuild which I could prob do myself, with the help of my dad, grandfather, and my dad's brother who was a military mechanic for years. I've seen a few books, and a video dedicated to performance rebuilding the 700r4. And I know all about rebuilding an a4ld twice.

It all depends on the set up you want to use. If you are going to try and use something else besides the stock transfer case and driveshafts, then a rebuild may not be needed, but still recommended. Part of the adapter kit that is being developed is a new output shaft for the 700-r4. It will have a 25 spline on it vice what ever the stock GM spline count is. This will allow the tranny to be bolted in with the adapters utilizing the stock Explorer transfer case and driveshafts. My tranny is being built by Bow Tie Overdrives http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com and they have several options to choose from ranging from $866 to $1695 depending on how well built of a tranny you want. Check out there website as it is just as informative as well as being reasonably priced.

I don't do anything extreme with my truck, I am just trying to find a trans that will last me 100k. I've spent over $4,000 on transmissions already. I'm kinda broke, but have no faith in my trans with only 5k on the rebuild. I'm just trying to be thrifty, but in something like this it probobly doesn't pay. :(

Which GM transfer cases will bolt to the 700R4 witout an adapter? Does GM even have a transfer case for a drivers side front diff?

GM has never had a drivers side front diff. I am not sure if any transfercases with a driver side front output will be a direct bolt up as the input spline count will be off. Even when GM and Ford used the same type of t-cases, as in the NP-205, the spline counts were different if I am not mistaken. I am learning that there is no such thing as an easy swap, but anything is possible.

Some observations: My 91 chevy pick up uses a NP 241 with a driver drop. It is mated to a 4L60 or 4L80E. The 4L60 is the later model 700. The new Jeep rubicon TC is a NP241HD, they are driver drops , it has a 4:1 low. That would be an interesting combo if the splining and bolt patterns are compatable with the 700. The 241 is a large case. But I think ive seen the rubicon cases available in the $1600 range.

I have too, but at that price, only seems to make sense to save up some more cash, and get an Atlas.

I forgot that the newer Chevy's with IFS were driver side front drops. That makes it even easier. Now all we have to do is figure out spline counts as I am pretty sure it is a standard 6 bolt circle pattern from the tranny to the t-case.

According to this thread thread the chevy s10 10 case is just about the same as a a jeep np231 and share alot of the same parts http://pub124.ezboard.com/fs10extremistsfrm61.showMessage?topicID=36.topic I know the jeeps use the 6 bolt strle and come in 21 or 23 splines. My guess is the s10 uses the 23 but not positive still looking.

Also in this thread it sounds like a jeep 231 will bolt up behind a s10 700r4. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56222&highlight=s10+tcase Still cant find info on spline count but Im guessing 23 If this is the case instead of tearing the tranny down to put a new out put in you could just use the stock tcase. Granded that opens up another can of worms on weather that is the best option or not to save a few bucks.

If your going to use a NVG case you'll be well advised to install a "Slip Yoke Elliminator" at the rear. However, at $500 for the kit youll loose any savings gained by using the case.:redexp:

thats why I said it opens another can of worms. Put by leaving the 6 bolt setiup it would allow you to use a klune and/or a number of other tcases you cant use in an explorer currently

This is all true. However, I am bitting my tongue as that is wht I really want to do and eventually will do in the future (Klune V), but in order to have what AA is doing I have to go there way for now. At least it is finally being developed and they have a number of other adapters that will bolt to the rear of the 700-R4 to run almost any setup. You just mixmatch your adapters when you buy them. I have to go a different route for now since AA is covering all the labor and stuff.

My trans just failed. Need to know an ETA on this adaptor plan. I would love to be one of the first to try it. Whats the total cost if using the stock transfer case for now?

I am not sure on the cost yet but I just found out that the product release date will be in the June of 2003 time frame. They are still waiting on the output shaft and the tailshaft housing/adapter to be manufactured.

BAH. no where close to fast enough. My X is my daily driver. Looks like a temp patch job with a a4ld. luckily a few members of this board have been helping me find one.

First, let me say I am really glad that this project is actually underway and will finally happen with the 700R4 unit. HOWEVER, from the sounds of it, the manual conversion kit (NV3550 or equal) seems to have been left out. Please say this isn't so. A lot of us still prefer to stir our own gears, for a number of reasons (Did you ever try to push-start an automatic? Very few, except Powerglides, can do it). I for one would definitely be interested in a really good manual trans option.

With 80K on my 97 EB and with her slipping already, its only a matter of time before my trans goes. I'm totally stoked to see this thread and wanted to make sure I keep getting the updates.

Big thumbs up to Diff Whack Daddy and AA, esp Vic, for making this happen. Its nice to see the 4x4 aftermarket finally starting notice of the best selling SUV on the planet, thanks largely to members from this board.

Jim

PS: Sorry for the double post - I can't delete my previous, can one of the moderators do that - thx.
