I have a 1996 5.0L Explorer to which I will be swapping in a built, naturally aspirated 347 motor in the coming months. It will be equiped with a Trick Flow Streat Heat intake manifold among other things.

My post is in regards to throttle body compatability. I would like to put on an aftermarket throttle body on but I understand that the linkage may need to be modified.

I have searched the forums and did not find what I was looking for. Not saying I didn't miss something here.

Are there any recommended throttle bodies that work best for this application? Does anyone have pictures of what they did to the linkage to make it work on their explorer?

I don't have the new motor yet to test fit or compare to my stock set-up, so any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Brad, this sounds like an interesting project. Make sure to put together a build thread. I'd like to watch your progress and maybe hook up to see it in action. :)

any details you would care to share about the 347?

Thanks for the link. I keep trying to tell myself that the information is somewhere on this forum. I guess I just didn't search properly. With that being said, I spent about half of my work day reading the forums. hahaha

Thanks Turdle for your link as well. I like that idea. Its just something I will have to play with at a later date.

As for the 347 it's being built by Jim Woods at Fordstrokers. The purpose of this motor is to be a fun daily driver, no boost or Nitrous or racing with OEM type reliability.

Cast crank
Forged I beam rods
Forged Pistons
TFS fast as cast heads
TFS streat heat intake
Custom Cam

Other items required (speak up if you see something out of line, or suggested source for below items)
Bigger fuel pump, 255 lph
Injectors 30lbs/hr
MAF - 90mm
TB - 75mm
Torque convertor - 2400-3000rpm stall speed
Built Trans - ??
Torque Monster Headers
Wideband 02 sensor
Tuning

Getting a Jay Allen designed cam? Don't worry to much about the transmission they are really stout in stock form. The only thing you might want to do is get a shift kit for it.

I'm pretty sure it is, but have not asked outright. Not sure what the agreement between the two companies is, but the cam sheet i was given to fill out was identical to one on Jay Allen's website.

I have not been told the transmissions are weak, but some have suggested other upgrades. Especially the 1996 compared to later years 4R70W's. I'd be glad to spend less in that department if at all possible, but I don't want to revisit weaknesses later on $$$$.....

I will do a build thread at some point. It only goes as fast a $$ come in. My goal is the warmer months of 2010. Its going to be tough this year as my wife and I have another baby on the way...

If it's coming from Woody then it's most likely a Jay Allen designed cam, I think they do a lot of business together. At least it seems that way on the forum. And from everything I've read you should be pretty happy with that combo.

That's exactly what i'm hoping. I was looking at many other choices and Fordstrokers kept popping up as being highly recommended. A company with that reputation, that specialize in small block fords only, use quality parts, reasonable prices, custom cam, and pay as you go plan. A winning combination in my books.
