I think its for stability at high speeds. Its sort of to get rid of shakes that eariler Explorers had.

That's what it's for. To prevent "axle skate" at high speeds. I removed the one off of my X when I did the TT (You have to or it will limit rear articulation due to it's short length).

In regards to the comment on the Gabriels falling apart, I have about 8k on mine now, and I have beaten them pretty hard offroading, and I have no leaks or problems(so far).
