Alternating Turn Signals

You don't need a heavy duty flasher for this mod.....BUT if you are pulling a trailer, just get one anyways. It is the standard Ford green one, you can probably find it at the junkyard for 50 cents if you dont want to get a new one :D

I did this tonight... I love it. I don't really know why, and I was even laughing a little bit at the people who were talking about who awesome it is, but after I did it for myself I love it. I had small problems unrelated to the mod itself but other than that it's working great. Thanks for this thread, for all the helpful guys giving great advice but, most importantly, thanks to huskyfan for his spiffy little diagram. I love this site.

Crimp connectors will work fine. My lights still work great after all this time.

Mine still work great. I just used a typical electrical connector for splicing. I am thinking about soldering so the connection looks as oem as possible and so that there are no problems down the road. I have had this mod for over 2 years now.

I attempted this mod today.

I inadvertendly touched the cut ground wire from the side light to the hot "signal" wire to the front light... vola... no signal lights. I assumed it was a fuse but that aooears ok. Further, the emergency flashers will not work either.

It must be the flasher??????????????? Where the hell is it located on a '99.

Boy do I feel ate up with the dumb ass ...........

Al, What color are the wires you did and could you give a description since well have the same colors? I'm broke this week and want something to do for this weekend even if it only takes 10 mins.

Yes, it was indeed the flasher. Ford has replaced simple flashers with an electronic one that not only controls the turn signals but also the hazzard lights. Further, they are real proud of the flasher, part number F67Z13350AA and is $34.75 plus tax.

The flasjer is indeed located where the post Bill Kemp made said t was. Its a pain in the arse to remove the panels to get to it.

I decided that this not the look for me so I returned it to normal. I only got the drivers side done.

The wire you want to attach the ground from the side light to is WHITE on my '99.

Good luck if this is the look you want.

does anybody make a relay that will blink twice as fast as the current one?

Not alternating but flashing

If I was to feed the ground of the front light into the cut power line of the side and then send that to ground would that make the side light do everything the front one does? b/c I am tryign to get them to ALWAYS be the same flash to get more light off each side of the truck with 4-way flashers for fire calls

Yoohooman:

Yeah, that would be like adding a trailer light....just one more bulb to the circuit. You might need a heavy duty flasher, or it might flash to slow.

Jim:

I am assuming you want a faster Toyota one?

i am sure any automotive relay would work, they are all pretty much the same... but a toyota one would be fine.... the relay flashes at normal speed, i jsut want it to do it twice as fast... anyone know where to find such a beast? do they even make them?

im headin out to do it right now...12:40 am in the pouring rain :)

i just though i would update..i have had my dads moded like this for 2 years. everything still works great. im very happy with this mod.

Mine has worked flawlessly for about the same amount of time. Right now, I installed mountaineer headlights, so I no longer need the mod.

Alright, well, I did this and it works well.

Note: When attaching the wire, attach the ground FROM THE BULB, not the other end. I was a dumbass and did this at first without thinking. Thankfully it only blew the fuse, and not the flasher.

I decided to make a few diagrams to show simply how this is done. Note wire colors are for at 1996 Explorer. Wire colors may vary on yours, but the principal remains the same.

First, here's where the bulbs are located. You will be attaching the wire from the one labeled "corner" to either of the ones labeled "turn"
locations.jpg

Once pulling out the corner lamp assembly, it is simple. I did this in less than 10 minutes start to finish.

Driver's side:
driverbefore.jpg

This shows the wires going to the corner marker bulb (2 wires) and the turn signal (3 wires)

Now, simply cut the black (ground) from the corner bulb and splice it into the green wire w/white stripe.
driverafter.jpg

(driver's side after)

Passenger side:

passbefore.jpg

Same as driver's side, but the turn signal leads are different color. Instead of being green w/ white stripe like on the driver's side, it is a white w/green strip wire. That's the the only difference.

After:
passafter.jpg

It's very simple to do. You may also wish to cap off the loose ground wire that used to connect to the corner bulb. I'm not sure if leaving it open would cause any problems, but I just capped it anyway, just in case.

Here's the result:

Turn signal blinking with parking lights on:

Note turn signals are blinking as usual, but instead of the corner lamp simply staying on as usual, it goes off when the other bulbs blink, causing a "strobe" effect.

Turn signal blinking without parking lights on:

Note that all three bulbs are blinking. The corner light is blinking too, now, just dimly. Nevertheless, all are blinking.

Parking lights with no turn signal:

This video is rather pointless, but shows that nothing has changed with how the parking lights work.

I figured since I did this I would give this a bump, and another explanation on how to do it, since there still seems to be some confusion. It's somewhat pointless, but it gave me something to do for a little while (mod and diagrams:D).

Besides, the alternating is cool:D

If this ends up causing any problems with the flasher/fuses, I will post up. I doubt there will be, since nobody else who has done this has had problems with it.

Interesting, but I would worry about a cop pulling me over for "flashing lights on an unauthorized vehicle" or something along those lines...
