I didn't do that. I'll have to go look
I just went out and looked at my brand new set to see if i could see which key i used and i cant tell.im sure it probably would have been fine but it sure adds stress to the pan if its not adjusted right.another thing i did was fill the two front holes clear full of rtv before i put the bolts in.just seemed like a leaking point to me.don't crank them down super tight either, just pretty snug.you don't wanna tighten them to the point its pushing the pan away.once you put the girdle bolts in and crank them it will make the allen part real tight.I yanked the lower pan also to have a closer look. I see exactly what you mean.
Thanks man, you saved my bacon.
Im going to take my lower pan to the tool store and get the right allen key, then re-assemble.
I knew things went far to smoothly last night. Thanks again!!!
Right on man.i would be more worried about them being lose and tightening the girdle bolts down and it pulling the pan down and cracking it.Ok, done.
The allen key is 11mm. Not a standard size, figures. I was glad I took my pan with me to the store.
I torqued the outer pan bolts to spec, then tightened the inner inserts to 12 ft lb. Then the main cap support bolts to 26 ft lbs as per the manual.
I can see where you should be tighteneng the pan first, then tightening the inner allen key inserts. Your exactly right, the pan gasket might leak otherwise.
Those two spots that you were worried about leaking? I purchased new O ring washers. $15.00 each. RTV would have been cheaper.

then i would cry![]()
Pans fine, it wasn't that much of a difference, except it didn't sit naturally tight around the block. As you said, this would affect the torque around pan to block.
It's all good. I am more than a bit happy an oil leak was probably stopped. That leak might have meant a motor pull. That would be bad.
Why Tim, I didn't know you were so emotional.![]()
Have shipping confirmation on the headers. Left Hodgkins, IN this morning. They will be here next week.
I just ordered a whack of oil and filters from amsoil.
Using their best oil filters to keep from circulating those really small metal bits.
Initial oil will be amsoil break in oil. Even if its only in the motor for a half hour, the price was ok on it.
Tim, if you decide you want to try an amsoil product at some point, I have a one year membership, so I can order it for you at the reduced rate. I'm not completely sure how much better their oil is anymore as the competition has probably at least caught up to them, but I know their filters are first rate.
