I didn't do that. I'll have to go look

I would suggest you do it.i know it means taking the second little pan off but i would worry about the main pan cracking.you just need to pull all the girdle bolts out, loosen the allen things,re torq the outside main pan bolts.then tighten the allen things against main cap bolts and the put the girdle bolts in and tq them.:(willing to bet some are lose or really tight.

I yanked the lower pan also to have a closer look. I see exactly what you mean.

Thanks man, you saved my bacon.

Im going to take my lower pan to the tool store and get the right allen key, then re-assemble.

I knew things went far to smoothly last night. Thanks again!!!

I just went out and looked at my brand new set to see if i could see which key i used and i cant tell.im sure it probably would have been fine but it sure adds stress to the pan if its not adjusted right.another thing i did was fill the two front holes clear full of rtv before i put the bolts in.just seemed like a leaking point to me.don't crank them down super tight either, just pretty snug.you don't wanna tighten them to the point its pushing the pan away.once you put the girdle bolts in and crank them it will make the allen part real tight.

and ain't no thing bud!;)should have warned you earlier, might have but cant find that post.lol

Ok, done.

The allen key is 11mm. Not a standard size, figures. I was glad I took my pan with me to the store.
I torqued the outer pan bolts to spec, then tightened the inner inserts to 12 ft lb. Then the main cap support bolts to 26 ft lbs as per the manual.

I can see where you should be tighteneng the pan first, then tightening the inner allen key inserts. Your exactly right, the pan gasket might leak otherwise.

Those two spots that you were worried about leaking? I purchased new O ring washers. $15.00 each. RTV would have been cheaper.

Right on man.i would be more worried about them being lose and tightening the girdle bolts down and it pulling the pan down and cracking it.

then i would cry :(

Pans fine, it wasn't that much of a difference, except it didn't sit naturally tight around the block. As you said, this would affect the torque around pan to block.

It's all good. I am more than a bit happy an oil leak was probably stopped. That leak might have meant a motor pull. That would be bad.

Yea figured it wouldn't be huge but that stress plus the stress of a sc and all that power, who knows what could have happened.just glad you posted the pics and made me remember it;)ooo one more thing...you put the oil pump to cam rod shaft in before the pump right?think that's the last thing that has to be done,or least that i can think of

Why Tim, I didn't know you were so emotional. :D

you should have been at all ford nationals last year when lindsy (spaz) presented me mini evil (which i have forgotten to show you). i dont think her, or the group realized it, but it brought tears to my eyes, lol
but yea, i hate oil leaks. and yup, we prob would have ended up pulling the motor.

Have shipping confirmation on the headers. Left Hodgkins, IN this morning. They will be here next week.

I just ordered a whack of oil and filters from amsoil.
Using their best oil filters to keep from circulating those really small metal bits.
Initial oil will be amsoil break in oil. Even if its only in the motor for a half hour, the price was ok on it.

Tim, if you decide you want to try an amsoil product at some point, I have a one year membership, so I can order it for you at the reduced rate. I'm not completely sure how much better their oil is anymore as the competition has probably at least caught up to them, but I know their filters are first rate.

They are the only oil i run in my bikes and race motors.I've been running castrol full synthetic sense break in on my truck only because its way cheap and i change my oil every year.but i only put about a thousand miles on my truck a year;)sounds like you will have a running truck in the next two weeks;)

lol, cause you know speedway wont have any stock for awhile! :D

one more thing i was going to add, but its not a "must have" thing is the bolts for the headers.

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2811747&postcount=1

i got them when i put the TMH's on mine. two only backed off, and that was after 17 hours constant non stop driving. you can get them at motion, thats were i got them.

EDIT disregard these. i just remembered they are different from a 5L bolt.....WAY different.

I think the grade 8 bolts Im using already should be fine (I hope).
Also, remember that these headers are a lot easier to work with than the tmh's.

I just picked up a block heater....$50.00
back to the little things that are adding up real fast.

I think I'm almost done though. All that is left is the cost of head machining, and antifreeze. There might be a few small incidentals, but lets hope they are really small.
