I posted earlier about that clunking and apparently there were no anti-rattle clips put on when the last shop turned the rotors. I was told they were a quick thing, but I'm not that familiar with brakes, I was roataing the tires and figured I'd just pop these in. That wasn't the case I'm guessing I have to take off the caliper to get them in. No instructions and I don't want to mess something up. So do have I to take the caliper off, how easy are they to put on?

you have to take ythe caliper off because the little anyti rattle clip, or spring goes under the rear brake pad, keeping tension on it.

Any auto parts store should have them, very cheap.
They are a snap to install, but you do need to remove the caliper.

Thanks, I'll do that. I'm wondering if checker jipped me on those parts. I asked if they had anti rattle clips, their system had antirattle clips, but thet had none in stock so i tryed a hardware kit, which they did have. This hardware kit consisted of an open bag (the guy said was ok) but there were only 8 anti-rattle clips. Is that right for a hardware kit, I'm thinking not, especially because their system had an item called just AR clips, but this was a 10.99 kit for only 8 AR clips anyway????? Im confused.

my 94 has AR clips, cept i think last time i did brakes i only used 4 ,1 on the top, and one on the bottom of each innerbrake pad. now removing the caliper (this makes me look foward to doing brakes on my X) the caliper is on with two slide pins that can easily b removed with a hammer and a punch/chisel/screwdriver. all you have to do is take you punch and push the locking tips on the end of the pin into the tunnel that they sit in and just push it through, the claiper will just slide off and you inner brake pad just sits on the insid of the rotor (also slides out) just put your AR clips on the end of the pad stick it back in put you caliper back on and your done

should only have 2 anti rattle clips for both calipers. They should be on the bottom of the pads....I have had trouble trying to put on 4 anti rattle clips per side.

there is only 1 set of clips on the 91-94 explorers, on the bottom of the rear pads.
There is no need to buy new ones if you still have the old ones, unless they get bent too badly.
The front pad locks onto the caliper and there is no way to get a clip in there.

When you service the caliper, you also need to clean and re-grease the slide pins. If the slide pins are worn you should replace them.

Did you mean the inner or somehow on the rear? I've only got discs up front. Also, so you are saying that there's no application for anti-rattle clips up front? Now I'm lost, the shop said the clips were left off from who ever did the previous job, that's why there's the loud clanking. ??

*bumpage* I never got a clear answer, Fortune you said the clips are only in the rear, but this noise is coming from the front end, and I also have drum rears. Anyway, I was told there were no AR clips on the pads, and it is definitly still clanking unless your hitting the brakes. The question though is
can AR clips fall off or are they something that had to be left off during installation? If they have to be left off, I''m gonna go talk to that shop. I havent seen where they go or how they go in, and Chiltons pics arent very clear, but I need to take of the caliper correct? Thanks again.

I think Fortune meant inner (rear) on the front brakes. My 94' only has 1 clip on the bottom of the inner pad. I dont think its possible for them to fall off unless they break. If they are not on the pads then they probably were left off during assembly. You do have to take the caliper off to install the clip. Remove the pad, put the clip on and reinsert the pad then reinstall the caliper. Don't forget to lube the slide pins during reassembly.

Thanks, I'm going to do that tomorrow, is it a good idea to have an extra set if pins, I thought I heard that if your taking them out.

Yes sorry.
The rear pad ont he front brakes, the anti rattle slip goes on the bottom of the rear pad only.
Slide pins need to be replaced when they are worn (rubber is cracked, they are way too eay to slide in and out) Replacing the slide pins can really make a big difference in braking noises. :) Mine had 200K on them before I said, hey those look worn, wow what a difference.

Thanks a lot guys, I just got the harware kit, had the two AR clips and 4 pins, put all the new stuff on, drove around the block, feels+sounds 10 better. Thanks again....

WAIT.. EDIT... I did discover while putting on a new belt, that the fan it self is has cracks on the central base part, in between each blade, running from the front to back, (of teh explorer) on the fan's base. It didnt seem wiggly but i guess if it was it would have flown apart, but should this be replaced right away? I think so for 2 reasons, 1 breaks, over heats, warp/break other stuff, 2, when it breaks it causes a lot of damgage, had a friend who put part of his fan through the hood, so I think i would ATLEAST destroy the shroud and maybe damage hood, radiator, etc. IS all the correct assumptions? sorry this is long...thanks

The cracking nylon fan is very common, infact they all do it.
Yes you should replace it ASAP.
It can take out alot more then that if it lets go, radiator, hood, you, anything in its path.

A replacement 11 blade version is available from Ford for like $35, make sure you get the 11 blade version, its called the super cooling package.

Good eye!

You will need two special wrenches to get the fan/clutch assembly off after you remove the shroud. Available to rent for free at most auto parts stores.

is there a special name for these wrenches or will they just know what I am tlaking about? Kinda of neat side note, the guy at autozone has a 94 with a 5pseed, has a new engine in the store actually, he was looking for interior stuff and I referred him here and he hook me up with some grease, no biggie but cool.. :p

PS are those fans a Ford only piece or will a parts store have that, or just stock replacements?

Possibly a parts store, but unlikely I believe they are dealer only
but at $35 not too bad.

If you say Ford 4.0L fan wrench kit they will have it

Yeah, i checked out napa and autsone, only stock replacement. Ill call teh dealership. this thread might finally be done. Thanks for all the help.

OUCH I called a dealership, 70 bucks for the super cooler blade, which they said was 10. The impression I got from the online parts stores was that non AC stock was 10 blades, ac was 9 blades, but their 70$ !!blade is onyl 10, I think Im going to just get a regualr replacement. anyways.....

Sorry to bring back an old post, but does anyone have a good picture of an anti rattle clip installed on a 2nd gen explorer so that I can see how they go on.

there is a writeup on front brakes for the 1st Gen in the useful Threads forum, with pictures....

Well I don't have a photo, but I just put some in a couple of months back. They actually snap into the TOP of the caliper, not at the end. There is only one per side. They attach onto 2 lobes in the center of the top of the caliper.
