Any way to fix the 95-9?'s 3rd (neon) brake light?

I havent heard to much about these (the 95-9? expo's that have the neon (I think) 3rd brake light...) but i could have swore I read somewhere that they go out pretty fast, idk if mines out or what, it doesnt come on...is there any way to fix that? I took the little ballast thing out (only the piece with the power wires goin to it) and the wires are feeding it correctly, I just plugged a small LED into the + and - leads and hit the brakes and it lit up....


Is this a common problem or what?
Whats the best route to replace it, or what to replace it with....


LED? Neon? Regular bulbs?
Anyone got pics if they have an LED one or anything...
