This piece broke off the door and now it's hard to close it shut. It's like a plastic thingy that rolls around/covers that metal part you see where it's missing (the last pic).

here's a door with it:

It looks like it hasn't had one for a while.. Is the door somewhat lose even with it shut now?

No door is tight, just hard to close and makes nasty metal on metal contact sound on that part lol. I noticed the piece was cracked a few weeks ago, then the other day it just fell off.

lol, oh ok.. well at least it isn't loose.. I would say try to get it off with the torques bit that fits in the end of that pin. If you get it loose then go to the junkyard and the whole assemble off of an explorer there. I'm not sure if you can buy those plastic pieces seperate. If I had to guess I would say it all comes as a unit.

EDIT: Jon was too fast! That would work too. I didn't think about aftermarket parts..

They have them at most parts stores in the "help" section.

I bought 4 new latches (bushings too, the whole thing) for $7.00 each. The bushings for the rear hatch are available separately in a 4 pack (2 large, 2 small, you'll only use 2) as well. Replace all of them and your Ex will be MUCH less creaky...

hmmm.. that's good to know. Now I'm thinking doing this too just to reduce the "creakyness" of it.
Joe, so I take it that you've found that the old bushings are the culprit for the creaks?

On all 3 of my Explorers- when I was pulling into a driveway, I would creak. Hitting some uneven pavement, I would get creaks and stuff, especially from the hatch.

New strikers/bushings fixed the noises in all three trucks. :)

Awesome Joe! Thats what mine does. You seem to know about all the specialized details that take a vehicle to the next step nicer!

cool to know, thanks

Well, guess what!!! Those bushings you buy do not work...they are too thick....the original bushings are thinner and have a groove cut in to them so the door latch engages fully ....i just wasted $5.00 at advanced and they insisted they were the right size ......baloney!! So, a temporary fix i used electrical tape until i get to the junk yard or the dealer to get the right ones!!

If you bought the bushing replacement kit, they're not for the doors. The only thing the bushing replacement kit is for is the hatch, and you can only use 2 of them. That's why I bought the new strikers for the doors.

Hm....im getting some creaking too...time for new strikers!
