Argh, time's a'tickin...BFG or Pirellis???

As a mostly on-road driver with the occasional trip on the sandy beach or snowy fire road here in New England, I decided to go for the Michelin LTX M/S. The problem is that there are absolutely NO LTX M/S tires in MA, so now I'm looking for something else with the 7 days left in the warranty period.

I guess I was never really satisfied with the LTX soft sidewall and streetwise temperment, so maybe the lack of LTX tires is a good thing...unless I get stuck with the RT/S.

I was thinking Pirelli, but I'm not sure if I can find those in time, and I am also considering the BFG A/T k/o, which should be at BJs or Costco if I'm lucky.

The question for the board is regarding your experieces with these tires both on road and off. Has anyone put any highway miles on them at speeds at 75 or so? I want to avoid the dreaded 65mph shake.

I have the BFG AT KO's and I have been very happy with them. They're fine at 75 mph, and they've done great in the snow for me. I don't know anything about the Pirellis, but I know there are people on the board who run them. I hope that helps.

The KO is the way to go but Costco does not carry them, the Scorpion AT is quieter than the BFG AT KO.

Never had any problems at speed of 75/80 either.

I justvgot BFG ATs ,like em alot so far ,not very noisy just the usual shakes. I dont think my truck will go 75! so I cant help ya there.

I have the BFG's on mine, and they are fine on the highway. A little bit of whine, but with the windows up it's really not noticeable. They have a pretty stiff sidewall. I've done a couple of trips in the 200 mile range at 80 mph, and they worked well. Offroad, they are great!!

ive had the pirelli scorpion zeroes on my truck before, and theyre going back on in about 2 weeks or so, and theyre amazing tires. pretty much, between the pirellis and the bfgs, you cant go wrong with either one.

Its probably to late to help, but I recently changed out my BFG AT/Ko's for Scorpion A/T's. My BFG's vibrated like crazy between 65 & 75 mph. I understand the vibration is not unheard for the BFG's although it is supposed to be relatively rare. I have had the Scorpions for several weeks. So far, they have been great both on and off road. The ride is especially good on the highway. Also, I saw an A/T tire test that concluded the Scorpions were superior to the BFG's in mud. Still, I think the BFG's definitely look cooler. Given all this, I think either one is a great choice.

Thanks for the input. I moved from the Firestones (which I didn't think were all that bad) to the Pirelli A/Ts. Tell me the Pirellis with that chunky tread pattern and white scorpion on the sidewall aren't just as cool looking as the BFG k/os! I know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Do you feel any vibration on the highway? My Firestones were as smooth as a car tire and I didn't look forward to "breaking the seal" and putting on new tires with the vibration and balancing issues that inevidably crop up.

The Scorpions were much chunkier than I thought they would be. I was expecting something like a Michelin LTX A/T. I was pleasantly surprised.

However fast you can get my truck to go, is how fast i have gone with my Pirelli's. I also have 31's. If you are staying with stock size, i dont think you'll have any problems. I love my tires, i think they are great, they are not loud at all, i dont even hear them!

I regularly do alot of highway driving at 75-80mph and I dont have any shakes, vibrations, or really any noise with my BFG AT's.(probably cause its too cold to have the window down this time of year) I love them. I recently went cruisin in my uncles field and they are great in gooie clay mud. I also find with my stiff front end I get great cornering from them too. I have never driven pirellis but I like my BFG's, so I say BFG all the way!

Seriously, I do mostly on-road occational SERIOUS four-wheeling. Here in Colorado, my tires have to perform on everything from hot, dry pavement to snow-pack and ice to mud and rocks. My Scorpion ATs rule the rocks AND the roads. My bone stock explorer has done trails that are rated 7 of 10 in difficulty and my tires were no problem at all.

The Scorp AT will wear a little faster because the compound is so soft, but there is LOTS of tread there. I've still managed to get about 50k miles out of mine even with the abuse they get.

I got the Pirelli's after I read an article in Automobile magazine comparing light truck tires. They did dry paved, wet paved, high-speed dirt, and muddy hill climb. Each tire seemed to have ONE strong point and suck everywhere else. But the Scorp AT came in second in EVERY catagory, except for value (where it came in first). Consistant performance. That's what I need and that's what I get.
