Arizona Run March 16-17 2002

Matt, I will be putting the agenda up soon. I hadn't decided until recently which side of town we were going to be on.

Everyone will run the Crown King trail all as one large group. The trail starts out in the low desert and works it's way up over 5000 feet to the cool pines. It's quite a nice run for modifieds and stockers as well. There are bypasses to all the tough obstacles and those that can't be bypassed can be negotiated by rock stacking and tire placement. So there will be a challenge for all.

If people don't mind driving about 1-1/2 hours for the next day's run we can do Martinez Canyon as a group all the way to the Cabins then the big dawgs can continue to finish the entire loop which is very challenging and amazingly scenic.

If you guys don't want to drive that far we can do any of a number of trails at the Table Mesa Rd. area North of Phoenix. The big dawgs who aren't worried about body damage can run Terminator and Rawdeal in one day with time left to do some exploring as well.

The stockers and lightly modifieds can run Tip Top mine and other trails.

Lots of choices, but I personally recommend doing North of Phoenix one day and East of Phoenix the next.

Rick, I guess the question would be, is it feasable to stay in phoenix somewhere then meet for the runs or would it be better to stay in a hotel closer to where the run is going to be at? I'm all up for saving money whenever possible :)

Phoenix will be our base. I will put together a list of reasonably priced hotels ASAP.

Crown King Run:

I just finished a run with a group from 4Wheelers Supply on Sunday. There were around 25 vehicles on this run. It was an all day event. We started at 8 am meeting just off I-17 and the carefree highway. 13 hours later I drove by that same spot. We had to stop allot for trail repairs and stockers that got hung up. A smart thing to do would be to call the establishments in Crown King and let them know we are coming. They had run out of Burgers! They have the best hamburger, they probabally tast like crap but after eating dust all day it is a 5 star meal:D
The most time we spent was at the last step up that does not have a bipass. We had a 2002 Silverado HD get hung up, this was after waiting a half an hour for a 2002 Z-71 attempt it unsuccessfully. It was quite a bottleneck.
I did see a stock Cherokee and stock BroncoII make it easily. I am sure the Explores will do fine.
Last but not least all the tough areas have been rutted out nicely, they are the worst I have seen. I have done this run 8-10 times.

Martinez the next day will be great:bounce:

Well as much as I HATE to do this I am going to have to pull out on this run, we just found out that we are going to be flown out to Gainsville FL to watch the unveiling of the Vance&Hines, ScreamingEagle V-Rod dragbike that same weekend, and as bad as I want to make the run, I can't pass the trip to FL. Take lots of pics for me,a nd everyone have lots of fun and be safe!

I Knew it!

:(
I found out today that my co-driver will be going to Phoenix in February INSTEAD of March. If I can find someone to help drive down there I still plan on attending!

The Idea of driving 1800+ miles (EACH WAY) by myself doesn't seem too appetizing.

Anybody from Minnesota/Wisconsin planning to go?

Jim

Rick, is there any way we can organize a run along the east coast?

New Policy for "Serious Explorations" runs

After a disappointing turnout at the Truck Haven run (25 showed out of 43 sign ups). I
decided to implement a new policy for all runs which are set up as "Serious Explorations"
runs. Including the upcoming Arizona run and the Moab run.

Here it is... There will be a $20 registration fee for the run which will be refundable in full
when you show up. If you don't show up you forfeit the fee and it will go to the site and or
the organizer of the event.

If you show up to the event without registering don't expect a place at the table when we
go out for a group dinner or have any other "special" events such as the pot luck.

We have the registration forms there for a reason. We need to know how many vehicles of
what caliber will be there so we know what trails we can run, how many seperate runs per
day and how many leaders are needed.

If this doesn't work out I'm perfectly willing to drop the whole organized event thing.

Sorry to be so harsh, but last year we had about 50 sign up and 25 arrived. We attributed
it to the rain which was forcast last year, but this year that wasn't an excuse. The weather
was as good as it gets for desert wheelin'.

To ensure your spot at the Arizona run please send $20 to my paypal accout ab7fh@inficad.com or by check to:

Rick Horwitz
4515 West Dailey St.
Glendale, AZ 85306

Funds will be returned when you arrive.

Are there going to be Dash Plaques?

Rick, it sucks that Truckhaven seems like a downer! It sucks that the turnout didn't mimic the sign-ups. Well hey, let me know where to send my $20. Today I found out that the trip to Norway I was supposed to go on at the end of Feb for 2 weeks is Canx'd (cancelled, at least for me) But I am glad I have the Arizona run to look forward to.... I just have to finish buying all of the mandatory items from the List (ie CB antenna, D-ring, etc.)

I wouldn't say the trip was a downer. Everyone who came had a great time. The folks who didn't show up missed out.

The trouble is in the planning for the event. It's important to have a good idea of how many people are really going to attend.

Due to a discussion in the moderator forum it was decided in order to protect from liability all of those who help organize the runs we need to prohibit anyone under the age of 18 from attending the runs unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The reason for this is twofold. 1. To keep the organizers from being held liable for damage to vehicles and personal injury. 2. If injurys are sustained to a minor hospitals cannot administer services without parental consent unless the injuries are life threatening. That means you could be sitting in a Moab hospital with broken leg until they could get consent from your parents to set it!

The good samaritan laws were mentioned, but that would only apply to first responders and not to medical personel at a hospital.

Sorry for the hassle, but it goes along with the crazy times we're living in.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it now:mad: I found out at lunch today that I have to go to Malaysia and Singapore on March 11 for two weeks. I'm pretty sure I couldn't talk my boss into footing a round trip ticket from Malaysia so I could make the trip. Hopefully I can make the next one.

Got a better idea Robert... Lets just go wheelin' in Malaysia instead:eek: LOL Sorry you can't maket it.

I wonder how the wheeling is there, hmmmm. The last time I was there, me and a co-worker just walked across the border from Singapore for the evening. I wasn't thrilled with the area we ended up with, especially considering the fact that they have big sign at the border that warns tourists to guard their wallets and valuables since pick-pockets frequent the area. Nice welcome. But then again, Austrailia is only about a 1,000 miles away and it's summer down there :)

Well I just book two suites at the Hawthorne Suites Hotel for 4 nite's for the Froader Group. Looking forward to this run :bounce:

I need some help from the AZ guys. Who would like to lead a stocker run? It would be great to have at least 2 or three leaders so the same person doesn't have to lead both days.

Hammer... ExplorGM... Are you guys interested?? Anyone else??

Rick, maybe I can show up early and we can prerun, then I can lead.

EDIT: BTW, I just got the trail book in the mail, maybe you can give me some idea of what we're doing?
