I have a '95 xlt with the premium sound system and 6 disc changer. I want to have an audio input so I can play music from my laptop. I know I could get a cassette adapter, but I'd rather make something better. Is there anyway I could make some inputs? Is there a way I could just disable the tape player and make it go to the audio input whenever I pressed the tape button? What are my options here?

Thanks

The best way to do this though it cost $70.00 is use a Auxiliary Input converter. It plugs into your CD changer port (gives an extra port so you can still use your CD Changer) and gives you RCA inputs. I've been using one for a month and a half with a second HU and it works great.

Do they have something like that to replace the tape player instead of cd player, b/c I never use the tape player.

the tape players built in and if you read carefully you can still use the cd palyer...

what are the benefits of that over a fm modulator?

I guess i'm just trying to use the tape function because its obsolete to me and it seems like a posible input because its made to get input from tapes, it would also be a clean install b/c all I would have to do is push the tape button to listen to my inputs. But that may not be an option.

o yea, I did use the cassette adapter that plugs into the headphone jack of whatever and it kept cutting out, like there was no tape there. What do you think caused that?

Is there somewhere I can tap into some wires to make an input?

The PIE adapter would be your best option. FM modulators are not very good sound quality wise and they cut out when the signal isn't very good. That would be my last option. There isn't anything you can do that goes through the tape player. If there was, the sound would be tape quality, not CD quality.

I have a fm modulator, and the sound quality is actually great...

except for the interference with my acceleration.

I think a sound filter would cure that.

I would try a search on a cheaper audio website like
Www.etronics.com

I have had nothing but good experiences with them AND the prices are cheap as hell

Actually I think the best option is a cheap head unit with AUX in, for like $150 you can probably get direct AUXilliary input and increased sound quality.

I bought the Alpine 9825 HU with an Aux Input Dongle that connects to the CD Changer input on the back of the unit. This gives you stereo RCA jacks that you could use with any audio device you wish. I think this is going to give awesome sound quality. I had been using FM Transmitters in the past. I went through 3 different models and they all SUCK in my opinion. The iTrip for the Ipod was the only decent one among the whole lot.

I'll give you a report on Sunday night after I install the new HU and 4 Alpine speakers.
