Hello everyone I am fairly new to this forum and enjoy all the helpful info I get from here. And I am in need of some more info.
I am trying to find the information that stadx2 posted or was trying to get posted about the AWD to 4x4 swap he did, I am looking to purchase either a 97 or 98-2000 explorer 4 door 5.0 v8 AWD but I want to make it a 4x4 so that I can also do the brown wire or green wire mod to bypass the AWD to 2wd for highway and city driving. Can anyone help with this? I know it is an old thread but need all the help I can get.
Thanks in advance.
Alan

Thanks for the welcome and for the link, I noticed this was for a manual shift (I will read it later) but is there a way to have it connected to the radio bezel like on the v6 4x4?

You can convert to a non automatic 4wd case easier. No need to bypass anything to get 2wd.

You can add the computer (or stand alone controller) to shift the t case electrically.

Yeah the Gem that is behind the radio and bezel, isn't that hard to get to. Just have to make sure you grab it from the vehicle you pulled the case from.

I have the above thread is what I am looking for is a conversion with electronic shift for a v8 like the one used on the v6 awd 4x4H 4x4L. Is there something like that?

Same process but with wiring involved, and the electric change motor requires more room.

I’ve done the manual shift case, but have no knowledge of the wiring involved with the electric.

There was someone who worked on his for months trying to get the wiring to work correctly.

You can make the 302 Explorer a true 4WD, with either the manual only shifting BW4406, or the less common TOD BW4406 transfer case. Almost all of the threads you have found deal with the manual only shifting BW4406.

To use the TOD version, you will have to make space for it along with the other swap steps, plus get the three needed modules. The gas tank is in the way of the shift motor when using the BW4406 TOD version. It lacks an inch or so I've read. The few people who have done that swap, also swapped the gas tank to a shorter Sport model, and moved the front tank mounting bracket.

The three modules needed are from the 95-01 V6 4WD Explorers, the TOD and 4WD module from any of those. But the GEM module has to come from your truck's model year group(1995-97 or 98-2001). Those three modules you swap in directly, and install a 4WD radio bezel from a 4WD Explorer(also match the years if you want the lighting color to match(95-97 is blue, 98-01 is green).

Aaron's thread "Convert V8 AWD to BW 4406 Manual Shift- A how to thread" is good for finding the needed drive shafts.

There are a couple of wires that need to be added to the 302 trucks for the 4WD electric shifting to work, that has not been documented yet clearly on the forum. But Jamie(410Fortune) knows the wires involved, he has done many V8 swaps and is familiar with that 4WD wiring. I asked him about it in one unrelated thread to this TOD BW4406 swap deal. So it's buried somewhere, but it will be easier to ask him directly again, he is very helpful.
