so as I approach 50,000 miles it is time for a new air filter. I figure I will either go with a K&N, or one of those Fram Air Hogs. However I figure i should investigate the CAI. I know that K&N makes one. Who else makes them, and which have you all had good expirences with?

A lot of people here use K&N and KNN...You can find a lot of information on this topic if you use the search button

probably thinking the kkm from www.kustomz.com or the k&n

also.... the fram airhogs suck, they are only good for 1/4 the life of the k&n and cost only like $5-10 cheaper depending on the application......

I've been pleased with Volant. Had a MAC before it and although it's good stuff, Volant is more refined and better constructed.

I just put a MAC intake in and I am thourghly enjoying it.

Thoough none of these are true cold air intakes, nevertheless they are great additions.

I have used the KKM ( http://www.kustomz.com/cat2.html ) and am currently evaluating a Mac ( http://www.macperformance.com/store/category.cfm?SID=3&Category_ID=515 ). K & N ( http://www.knfilters.com/ ) also makes a very nice unit, although its expensive.

If you just want an open filter and no intake tube, go with the KKM. If you want looks as well as function, I recommend the Mac.You will be happy with whatever you chose.

Al is right, none of those are true cold air intakes. They're open-element intakes.

To get a cold air you'd have to fab up a scoop. Lots of the 4.6's and turbo diesels have them but I don't know of any true cold air kits for Explorers.

Do any of these intakes produce a lot of noise?

You can also run some ducting using shopvac hose

Can't beat the MAC for the price. I got mine for $139 shipped from proficientperformance.com.

What I like most about it is that the engine still sounds stock until the upper RPM range, then you can really hear it.
