Best single subwoofer on the market?

No need to pay that much, my 10W7's (2 of them) were had new for 740 on ebay, and the 12W7 for less than 500. granted I get no warranty, but I have been hammering this 12 for almost 4 years now, with no worries. As far as the video goes, believe it, dont believe it. No matter to me, was stating my side of things. The system wasnt built for spl, but does have the ability to do so. And as far as all those other subs, remember the W7 is running on 10 year old technology, well before those other subs were worth speaking of. I didnt NOT call the W7 the best sub, it was just the best sub for me. I can name 30 other subs that will out due the W7 on every spl contest, but getting loud is teenagers, who dont need Audiophile equipment in the price range of JL AUDIO. Everyone has their own taste, u want something that does 160 db @ 47hz. . . . . fine, I want something that does audiophile sound at no matter the frequency! My Alarm clock is loud, that doesnt make it worth listening too! Just my .02

You were the one to make a ridiculous claim of 146 db's in a box tuned to 28 hz. A ridiculous claim. You just got ruffled because someone here was smart enough to call you out on it. And do you really think that over the 10 year production run of the w7 that the design and technology hasn't changed? It most certainly did. And I would never say the w7 is junk. It is a great sub but for the retail you can get a sub just as good and better for a fraction of the cost.

Oh....I'm sorry. I was comparing the w7 retail cost to other drivers. I guess the comparison doesn't work as well when you compare a w7 that was purchased as a B stock factory reject. Because that's what they are. factory rejects that carry no warranty and serial numbers removed.

Who ever said I want an spl sub anyway? The drivers I posted are sq drivers that sound fantastic and get loud as hell. i have an Icon and it sure isn't an all out spl driver. The reccomended box tuning is 32 hz. Right about the perfect mix of sq and output. far from drivers that a teenager would have in a fartbox. You know the kind of kid I mean. the kind that gets metered and goes on the net to have bragging rights. even worse than that are the ones that outright lie about the numbers to make themselves feel superior. Oh damm....that's what you did.

I for one could care less about spl numbers. I have never been metered and probobly never will be. I would guess in the mid 130's but who cares. I have been seriously into car audio for about 30 yrs. I was a teenager a long time ago that just wanted to get loud but I grew up. SQ is far more important to me. take a look through my thread here and see if you approve.

I have read your replies, I have seen your post. The discusion wasnt about your sub, handing mine "its hinde quarters". But you took it there. I dont care what you believe, or think about my post. It was my post. It was about a subwoofer, and the experiences with said woofer. Was not about what "you" do or dont believe, sure wasnt about your sub beating mine or not. Wasnt even about spl numbers in general, was in reply to, "Has anyone had any experiences with a W7! Not your sub, nor your believeing one or another. A W7 wont produce SPL? is SPL not the compression of air @ said frequency? Does the W7 not move air, in fact, Im willing to bet, my 12w7 (and yes, complete with serial numbers from an online retailer) does in fact have more peak to peak excursion than your said sub? Probably so! Does that make one or the other louder. . . NO! Fact is, 90% of all spl systems ae dependant on the ability and tuning of its enclosure. You can come on here and call people liars, I thought this was a site free of name calling? Shows the maturity level of both your comments, and knowledge. So in response, If you dont like it. . . .Cry me a river, Build me a bridge, and get the F##K over it!

And who was the one that posted a bogus spl number? was that you? i wasn't comparing my driver to you and I wasn't saying it could beat it. I have seen very reliable numbers of the 12w7 online and they are a respectable driver. more of an sq driver than spl. Which is why I felt it was ridiculous for you to post a bs number. the only reason I brought my exact sub or enclosure tuning was because i felt you were insinuating that I think like a kid and have a fartbox. I do not. I know real audio and have for a very long time. Just go back several postsand read....this started by you and your spl number. Just because I say bs you have a hissy fit. Most of you JL fanboys get like this to justify the money you spent. And to clarify....direct from JL's site.

The best SINGLE subwoofer for what originally started this thread would probably be just the biggest one you can fit in the back, using the entire rear passenger and cargo area as the enclosure.

Like so:

Personally I prefer the JBL GTO804. 8 inch reduced-depth sub. 200 watts. 50 bucks. It's all you really need in a vehicle for bass.

the Infinity 860w is also good if depth isn't an issue. It's actually less expensive than the GTO804.

Back to the topic....To say the best subwoofer on the market is entirely too vague. there are different drivers for different applications and most certainly different budgets. I'll list a few of my all time favorites which I have owned at one time or another.

Dynaudio Esotar

Morel Ultimo

Those are 2 of the cleanest pure sq drivers on the planet. So clean that a lot of people wouldn't like them. Amazing drivers though. Pure sonic bliss when powered correctly and in the right enclosure.that pretty much goes for any driver in my list or any driver in general. You can take the best driver and make it sound terrible in the wrong enclosure. Wrong cubes...wrong tuning etc.

AE IB 15 - Probobly the king of free air subs. Incredible when utilized the right way.

JL W6 - Expensive but one of the cleanest drivers I have ever heard or owned.

JBL GTI MKII - Amazingly clean driver. Super high efficiency, Sounds great IB, sealed and ported. All around fantastic driver.Too bad they're not being produced anymore.

TC LMS R - High excursion, High output sq monster.

Image Dynamics IDQ - Super clean sq driver that I loved having in my Explorer. I could go back to them in a heartbeat. Not very expensive either.

My last favorite is one that most likely nobody here has ever heard of. DIYMA R12. This sub was right on par with the DYN and Morel. Unreal how clean and transparent it was. It disapeared with your front stage like the Dyn and morel did but a fraction of the cost of the others.

Get A SSA Gcon Or A Incriminator Audio Sub. For the price they will blow away a JLaudio W7

There is no best, but if you want to quake jump off the mainstream and ok into sundown, audioque, dad, fi, re audio, digital designs, incriminator. But if you wanna go mainstream my favorite sq with a nasty attitude is Boston acoustics spg-555 it eats the w7 alive. bottom line w.hat ever you choose build a custom enclosure and power it properly. Look into sundown and audioque for Amps also.

I love how this 6 year old thread got successfully resurrected. lol

Zombie threads ftw.

I run an Incriminator Audio Death Row 15 in my Neon, which is going to be transplanted into the Explorer soon.

i just read this thread myself. Amazed the JL w7 still has a lot of hype.

It is a great driver. No doubt. But you can buy a good variety of drivers that will outperform them and cost a fraction of the jl. If you want to help jl pay for one of their patents knock yourself out.

It's hard to buy ANY driver that will outperform that install at that low of a frequency. That's a RIDICULOUS number that low.

Not saying that it's the end all, be all or anything. I'm saying installed well, the w7 will make a lot of people happy, as will my Death Row or your Icon.

Well said but....My point has been that there are much better ways to spend a grand rather than dump it all into a w7. There is nothing better than seeing the look on the face of a w7 owner hear a system like yours or mine. It really gets under their skin that they could have saved so much money. Believe it or not I have owned a lot of JL equipment over the yrs. I have loved all of it. None of it was purchased at retail though. The w6 is IMO far superior to the w7. That is one fantastic driver. I would almost consider paying retail for one.

At retail, the w7 is grossly overpriced. For the price you can find them on the second hand market, however, they are not overpriced. And I agree wholeheartedly on the w6 comment. Manville Smith from JL used to patrol Caraudio for JL threads to throw in the official word from the horse's mouth, and on a w6 v w7 thread he said that up to 500 watts the w6v2 is louder, and past 500 watts the longer excursion of the w7 makes it louder. The w6 sounds better to me by far than the w7, always has, and probably always will. But if I were to buy an SQ sub, it'd be the IA Flatlyne. After hearing one 12 in a QWTL on a 50 watt plate amp in a house, I'm convinced there isn't a better sounding subwoofer on the market. It's that damn accurate.

No mention of the type R? I have a 12" Alpine SWR 12D2. The SPL & SQL is amazing....for a short period of time. Mine got extremely hot and melted the voice coil. Second one was trying to do the same. I have my MB Quart ONYX 1.1500 turned way down now to make it live. I'm rather disappointed. This sub can produce mind bending bass, just for five minutes.:thumbdwn:

I have heard good things about the type R. However I would be more inclined to include it in a thread more along the lines of best subwoofer on a budget.

Pretty much this. The limiting factor of the Type R is the voice coil diameter. It's only a 2.5" coil, and a small winding length at that. The Type R is a very nice sounding sub, and in the right enclosure can be a very nice daily subwoofer, if you can get past that shortcoming.

If you want the best overall sub, the best answer is the one that meets your installs requirements and the cost is worth it to your budget.

Otherwise, there is no best :)
