Also, I've still got my A/C compressor/lines/harness all hooked up..

Remember, not all of us are as cool as you JD!! :p:

AC geezz whatca got in there a dang tv and dinning room too!!thought this was a 4x4!!pff AC who has that!!

Yeah I am pretty strong aren't I?

Mark if your keeping up on this, I think you said you had to fix your dented err overtorqued valve covers? How'd you go about fixing the dents? I think it was you, I'll have to go back and recheck the forum. I'm thinking about puttin them on a smooth surface and beating them with a rubber hammer, thought I'd ask for a better method first.

I used a hammer and wood. I put the valve cover on flat wood and then cut a piece of wood so I could get it into the channel of the cover and hit it with a hammer. It wasn't elegant, but it worked.

I would think a gasket with rings and rtv would work fine.just make sure to clean both the head and cover surfaces off with alcohol or something like it.

Your idea beats the crap out of mine.. (no pun intended)..

I'll try that tomorrow, I'll be taking Sunday off for obvious reasons :p:

JD I cleaned the fuel rail with alcohol then put vaseline on it to press the injectors in.. when I cranked her up this morning it revved up to like 3500 on it's own.. thought it was kinda funny.. maybe I've found the new fuel? Alcohol and Petroleum jelly? :p:

yea those covers dont take much to hold em down, you stong man you lol

WHOA NOW!!.... :shifty_ey

I ordered a Fel-Pro rubber-style set from AdvanceAuto, it comes with a new fuel rail gasket and the little metal rings, hopefully THIS will do the trick...

I'm about to cry I want to drive my truck so bad. It's sad just seeing it sitting there, in it's own little puddle of oil :( :(

Alright, I'm leaving now to go pick up the Fel-Pro rubber style gaskets then coming back to put them on. These gaskets actually have indentions in them around each bolt eye so you don't have to use the metal o-rings, or so I was told by the guys at Advance as well as the guys at Ford.

My question is, since I've been having all these problems, should I give the gasket a LIGHT coat of RTV on both sides before I stick it on, or will that decrease the effectiveness of the rubber of the gasket sealing to the metal?

I will still be fixing the indentions in the valve cover from me over torquing my old bolts, Fel-Pro gives you a new torque spec, though I forgot what it was..

Brandon, I realize this is probably too little, too late, but on my OHV rebuild, i used the cork gaskets that came with the rebuild kit for the valve coves and RTV'd both sides, torque the covers to spec, and never had a issue. Granted, I could have saved time using the felpro set, as those, i believe, do not need RTV. since they are rubber. As a good rule of thumb, i only use rtv on cork gaskets. Also, when I get home, ill check the torque proceedures for the valve covers, i cant remember if there is a certain pattern you tighten them down it or not...But yes, on my first gen, I had the little wings and used them like there was no tomorrow...and never leaked

Call me if you have any questions bud, and seriously, CONGRATS on getting this far!

Any updates??

Yeah I got up off my butt and have been working on it today.. Trying to put the hard plastic/rubber fel-pro gaskets on.

Note To Self and Anyone Listening; DON'T, I repeat, DON'T use RTV-based gasket material for the valve covers. What a PAIN to clean up, damn this mess!

I've got the passenger side cleaned up and bent back ready to go, just gotta warm up and go out there and put it on. I'll be using a little bit of RTV where the heads meet the lower intake, looks like that's where I'm leaking on both sides.. I'll go at it till I can't anymore, hopefully I'll get it all done tonight.

Fel-pro valve cover gasket and RTV

Prior to applying a used valve cover lightly tap the screw holes on the inside of the valve cover. with the ball side of a ball peen hammer to even the holes out to the rest of the cover and allows the screw to gain more purchase in fastening the cover.

Use your RTV on the valve cover side of the gasket to hold the gasket in place. Do not put the RTV on the head side as you know by now. The same holds for the intake manifold gasket except for the valley ends

Experience gives the test first then the lessons come later:)

I got both valve covers off, cleaned them up pretty well, bent them back, cleaned the heads.. then the wind started to pick up and the temperature began to drop, I got cold and had to call it a day..

I think I'm growing a uterus as we speak.. :p::rolleyes:
