i have a code 33 that comes up and says its the egr not opening

i went to the library, look online at chiltons and asked some good mechanics

sits on the drivers side of your throttle body. I think right behind the IAC valve.

I have a '93, so I don't have one. Is it possible yours has been replaced with a pre '94 throttle body?

It should be staring you right in the face as you open the hood.

Edit: a quick google of 94 explorer egr valve would have given you this.

Yup- #2 is the EGR, #3 is the DPFE...

A '94 should be outputting 3 digit codes. Are you certain that you are reading the codes correctly? You wouldn't be the first to interpret 111 as 3.

This man makes a good point.

Still doesn't explain why nobody can find the EGR valve though...lol

still unable to locate egr and dpfe

to clarify my situation,i have a ford ranger,1994,2wd,4.0

i would post some pictures but im not sure how to do it

as far as the codes,im failing nox test, which usually means egr or dpfe

i was also told this stuff should be obvious to see

i have read many forums on this subject and im not the only one that seems to have this problem

if any one can explain how to upload a picture it will clear up alot

guess im screwed

i went o a ford dealership and they could not find the egr or dpfe
their diagram shows it on drivers side and right in the open

but its not hter or the exhaust tume or even bolt holes on the manifold

there is only 1 thing that it could be and that is,someone replaced the engine

mines a 94 and they started using the egr valve in 93

but i bought a starter for that truck when i got it and i asked autozone what other years take that starter,it goes back to 1990 and they dint have a egr valve on it from what i understand
i cintacted the emmissions place here in phoenix and they tell me that its illegal for someone to swap engines like they did

all this do to nox failure,,acceptable level is 3.00 and mines at 3.09

so i cant kick punt or pass..lol
any ideas how to pass nox

if not thanks for your replys

Get a throttle body and parts for a 4.0 with EGR and put it on there?

there a problem houston

the problem with replacing that stuff is i dont see any wireing that is extra
or hoses

and i habe been all over the internet and im not the only one that cant find this stuff-as in other ford ranger owners looked for their egr and they couldnt find it on theirs

and even if they swaped the engine with a older 1 ,what regulates all the emmissions that the egr valve would..im gonna try the cat converter first
but beyond that i have no idea

It's pretty obvious you have a non EGR engine. So why don't you forget the egr thing & fix the problem. It's not egr cause it don't have it. A good shop should be able to diagnose why it's failing. Maybe you need a cat or o2 sensors, or maybe run some sea foam in the engine to clean it out. Buy new plugs & wires. etc etc etc.

problem fixed

you would think ford would know that..lol

so i put some 91 octane, bottle of heat, and a bottle of guaranteed to pass

i had a free test coming so i went from 3.09 to 2.62 nox,all ineeded was 3.0

thanks for your help
