I want to do a 302 engine swap into my explorer. I know i am going to need a different transmission. what about transfer case and axles? ive got the xlt 4x4 with manual locking hubs and manual transfer case. I found a guy who has a 302 he has no use for and I can pick up dirt cheap.

Yea, I figured as much. Im thinking about an NP205 transfer case. I had one in a 1986 dodge ramcharger. im actually surprised by my explorer. ive been haulin 4500 lbs regularly and you cant even tell your pulling the weight. This build will be a slow build. Im thinking about a year- year and a half. if i change the axles i was thinking of F250 axles.

old bronco ford 9" axles are great swaps for explorers, cuz then you can go solid in front too.
and yes, first gens have great torque, you can hardly tell your towin.
i loved towing the 5000lb trailer in my old 93, it felt like it was built to do it... even though it probably destroyed my a4ld lol

ive got the a4 in mine as well. lol. seems pretty good to me. but nothing like a c4. arent the 9 inchers hard to find though? 8.8's are common though. arent they? but like i said i plan on gathering the parts over the next 1-2 years oh btw. LMC truck has a catalog for the explorers, bronco II's and rangers.

Jegs has a conversion kit for the ranger. The kit comes with headers and motor mounts. For the tranny well I'd go get a FI full size bronco or 1990's f150. They have a married transfercase and electric overdrive. The 8.8 31 spilne is one strong rearend. Thats the rearend they are putting in the new shelby gt500's
