The 5.0 Mod list!

I just think that would make it easier on everyone and bust down alot of repeat threads maybe ever put links and stuff in the threads. I'd even make the master post and update it regularly if you guys are down for telling me what you got and where you got it, or make links the write ups on how to make them or to like the 5.0 exhaust post.

Ok started it Here http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=188596

Hope to do:

-TM headers (jon smith knows where I'm going with this :D).

Get in line he's helping me first:D

My mods

1. MAC CAI intake

2.Flowmaster 50 series, removed 2 rear cats. (didn't notice much difference over stock)

3. Torque Monster headers, ordering them next friday.:burnout:

Get in line he's helping me first:D

Given that yours are being ordered AND you live in Kansas, I don't think we'll be tripping over each other to get it done. :p:

Any of you have dyno data for these mods? If so, please post them.

Are the TM headers really that amazing of a mod?

YES!

You'll be amazed at the difference they make both in power and mileage. The sound is just another plus.

Seriously, between my 4406 and the TMH's I am getting 17 mpg in mixed driving conditions even with my 33's, lift, and weight of all added parts. That is not a best, that is several tanks of gas.

So without getting into machine work on the heads, what is the build potential (hp/tq) for an Explorer 5.0?

I just got an email saying that I'm receiving a $2k fellowship for the fall... so I'm thinking:

(In addition to my throttle body spacer, MAC CAI, 2.5" exhaust, 4.10's and manual 4406)

Re-do exhaust with a Flowmaster 50
TM headers
1.6 RR's
1" intake spacer
Maybe E-303 cam

Think that would yield 275-300 hp?

That would eat up half of my fellowship, but hey, its money that I wasn't budgeting and will soon be in my pocket right? ;)

Hey Evan... NE Arkansas isn't thaaaaaat far from Southern IN ;) (I could probably come up with a reason to be in Paducah, KY for work)

Really, your heads are ideal- not much can be gained by working on them for the HP you are looking for.

I'd install the headers, intake spacer, rockers and cam all at once- it wouldn't be that hard to do. The headers would certainly be easier to do with the upper intake and valve covers removed. I'd venture to guess with proper tools and 3 days it could be done.

I am not really sure about HP and TQ numbers, but you'd have one mean 5.0 for sure. You'd definitely need to think about a dyno tune after all of that- your stock PCM could do it, but not to its fullest potential.

If you ever get headed south, let me know- I may be able to meet up with you.

Would it still be possible to run all of this on 87 octane? Obviously I would get a performance tune for 91/93 but I wouldn't want to limit myself to premium.

I guess if you don't change fueling, spark advance (both of which a dyno tune would do, but could be disabled), mean effective cylinder pressure (turbo/SC) or compression ratio - breathing mods should have limited effect on octane demands.

I am not really sure what the cam would do to the equation, but I'd say the rest would be OK for 87.

But really if you think about it, premium is $.20/gal higher. If your programmer optimized all things, you'd gain more than it'd cost each fill up. Lets say you got 16 gallons at a fill up. .20 x 16 = $3.20. If you got only one more MPG, you'd be money ahead. Buy you know this, your an engineer :D

The only thing stopping me from a tune is a local tuner with a dyno and or wideband 02.

I am not really sure what the cam would do to the equation, but I'd say the rest would be OK for 87.

The more I think about it... cam, roller rockers, intake, exhaust

All of those increase the volumetric efficiency of the engine. They make it easier for the engine to move the air through the engine (that whole engine being just a large air pump thing).

Mods requiring premium would be ones that change:

spark curve
fuel curve (flow, rate, duration, timing)
forced air induction
higher compression ratio

Then again, you could do all of this and run E85 (which has a higher octane rating due to the alcohol) and make serious power/torque and in a rewnewable manner :)

But you know this, your an engineer :D
Yes, I know LoL I am constantly reminded of this. I was doing math while running tonight ~ figuring out if I could fit mods into my monthly budget.

Any before/after dyno data?

Why do you pull this out your a$$ every time someone says they noticed a gain in mileage from a mod they did.
