Wow, I didn't know those mini's help up so well.

http://www.bridger.us/2002/12/16/CrashTestingMINICooperVsFordF150

The MINI had almost no intrusion which "indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained very well" - the F150 on the other hand had "Major collapse of the occupant compartment that left little survival space for the driver."

Interesting. Just like how the Smart holds up that they sell in Europe.

You do realize that the test he's talking about is 3 years old and on the old F-150, not the new version. The data he gives to support it also is not wholly truthful..It lists deaths per million vehicles not deaths per a certain type of vehicle which would most likely alter the results. Statistics are wonderful for proving what you want to see  .

However, it is disconcerting to see how much damage the F-150 took....it should have been better engineered, and thankfully the new version is.

That vehicle is still out on the roads, therefore still being involved with accidents. Although its not being made, what that tests proves is still relevent.

I know it's about the old vehicles, It's also mentioned near the bottom aboutt he new ones. I'm still surprised the f 150 crumples like that.

Yep, I know, that's why I put up the last part of the statement. There are a lot of 'em on the roads. Vehicles should not crumple like that. I'd wager that the new F-150 extended cab would probalby crumple pretty well too. There's just too much open space without support. Adding the suicide doors to the truck significantly decreases it's crashworthiness. Having a B-pillar between the doors would most likely have kept the roof from popping up and the door sill from dropping as much.

It would be interesting to see how all the other pickups out there did. Most of the manufacturers now make suicide door versions of their trucks, so I'd bet some of them would crumple up pretty badly too.

Looks like it faired much better(04-05 f150s):

Not only how much the cab crumpled, but look how the wheel has folded in and is starting to protrude into the cabin.

I'd hate to see how all the other trucks held up! Is the new F-150 any better?

Just for giggles, I pulled up the ratings on the new F-150...Thankfully it did very well...check out http://www.iihs.org/vehicle_ratings/ce/html/0328.htm.

The Nissan Titan, the Toyota Tundra and the Dodge Ram 1500 also got good ratings, while the Chevrolet 1500 got a marginal rating. Looks like the manufacturers are finally getting the message.

Maybe that's why NASCAR has been approched by leading US car manu. to help design a better driver compartment. It's all about how the energy is absorbed and redirected to other parts of the car instead of the driver. The older stock cars were actually too stiff, now they are desingned to crumple and absorb more of the impact. It's one of those laws of phyisics, you can not get rid of the energy you just have to redirect it or absorb it into something...hopefully not the driver. It was like the old Chevy 11 that had that big 327 CI motor in a small car that had a unibody construction.... A death trap.

It looks like the latches in the rear doors of the new F-150 held a lot better. Although the cabin has deformed at all.

Looking at the pictures, the Cooper had straight frontal crash, while the F-150 was an offset frontal--very different tests, and kind of like comparing the side impact of an older GM pickup with and without explosives...

I saw an offsett test at under ten miles per hour on the mini and the structure actually went out of whack. Everything shifted and would have required major work to straighten it.

Both of these vehicles hit the exact same off-set barrier at 40mph

......

First sentence of the article. Well second.

You hit the nail on the head. That's the reason Dodge dropped their old style quad cab in favor of a 4 door with B-pillar. The old Rams weren't quite as ugly after a crash as that F-150, but they were close.

You Canadians think your all that but ain't. I have never seen a foreign car or truck mechanically last longer than 15 years with out something going severely wrong with it, like the engine. American cars, especially Ford are excellent cars and the Best trucks you can buy.
hahaha...this guy cracks me up, i'll bet he is from texas or oklahoma...possibly even arkansas.

i was a lil shocked to see the f150 crumple so much, but the mini would look even worse if it weighed the same.

Yeah but the Mini definately doesnt look like it hit an off-det barrier...

Right, because it did so well.

No, because the front end damage resembles a full frontal impact. If this was an offset photo, the passenger's side should be protruding further than the driver's side.
