I recently purchased some fogs from Walmart. My 2001 XLS does not have fogs. My questions are do I need custom brackets for the install or will the U shaped ones be good enough? I can run the wires but where do I connect in to turn them off when brights are on? Any other suggestions or help is appreciated.

he might want to do that so its legal? anyways though, thats the way the stock ones were wired right? but he didn't have the stockers? is there a legal reason you want them to shut off with the brights? if there is not i recommend not wiring them that way. it will be easier on them not to be switched on and off repeatedly, and no one will ever (should ever) be close enough to your truck when the brights are on that they'll be able to tell the fogs are on. Also- the light pattern put out by your brights can be improved by running the fogs at the same time. i know i almost always run my piaa's (which are set-up completely on their own circuit) with my headlights and brights (although, i only use my brights now when i'm afraid there are cops around since my driving lights are literally 10x brighter)

all that said, if you need to do it that way i have one more question- do you want the fogs independent from your headlights? or would just running them whenever the regular head lights were on be ok?

the brackets should be fine, where are you going to mount these lights? just make sure you will be able to align the lights properly with those brackets as you install them. i'm guessing they don't have very much adjustability so you may want to wire them first and then check alignment before bolting them on

oh and welcome to the site

I was under the impression that I needed to do this due to the law...I do want them independent from the headlamps, to have the ability to turn them off when I need to.

My 2001 has two holes in the bumper, they should fit perfectly in the holes, I do not know if they will braket easily behind the bumper.

i do not know about exactly how easy it will be to do the bracketry on a newer explorer as you are going to do. in all likelihood it will be very easy- if your interested there are some pics of brackets i had to cut for my fogs in my cardomain page. you won't have to do anything like that

i wouldn't worry about making them shut off with your brights at all, and i agree with making them independent of your headlights.

so assuming they come with a relay and wiring in the box (let me know if they don't or if you got them used or somthing and we'll build you a wiring kit) all you have to do is wire them up, use a ring clamp to take power from your battery, use the negative battery terminal as your ground, and find a power lead thats always on when the car is on. to do that i'd just take power from one of your fuses (again don't ahve an 01 so you;ll have to use the owners manual to decide which one) the head unit fuse would be a good choice. and your all set!

also, you should find a rubber grommet to the left of the brake pedal to pass the cables through for the switch and the power lead.

as for where to mount the switch- that will be up to you. my preference would be in the stock location (on the head unit surround) or in the kleenex holder

Expo 5.0... i was wondering how your driving lights 10x brighter?

they just are, the combination of the piaa glass lense, the better bulbs, and the higher wattage makes them that much brighter.

remember i have pro 90 xts
