I’m kinda figuring as much that they will be too different, I still am keeping a lookout for a cheap Dana 35 or preferably a Dana 44 low pinion housing to test on the beams as I have both sets of beams at my disposal. I want to build a rear TTB setup and if a low pinion can be made to work it will strengthen it when used in a rear application, though some modification would need to be made and fabricated to secure the housing in the beam better.
I did some measurement on the beams I have and you can shorten the dana 44 beam on the pivot end ~2.4” each and use a dana 35 intermediate shaft giving you a 60” WMS which would better center the TTB diff when used in the rear.
I’ll post my discoveries if I can locate a Dana 44 low pinion housing for cheapish.
I have my desired drivetrain picked out and now trying to see about axle possibilities before I would settle on using the 8.8 solid rear with 5x5.5 lug shafts.
Aye, I’ve seen 2 builds on the forums about them and both have gone slightly different ways and I know my idea isn’t anything new but I want to try and design it and design it well for long term durable usage.
I’m leaning to a Dana 44 cause that’s what I have parts wise but the Dana 35 with Dana 44 outers is also appealing (I’m putting 44 outers on the front as well for matching lug patterns and strength) and finding a Dana 35 low pinion will be a lot easier, cheaper (and not much strength would be lost) than finding a Dana 44 low pinion here in VA.
Sounds like a cool and interesting build, but how will you end up with a 3000 lb rig if the Ex weighs about 4000 stock? Especially with that 300, it’s no lightweight! No body maybe?

Shortening the frame to about 100” or less and ditching a big chunk of the body and glass and make tube frame canvas wrapped doors….maybe even swap a CJ7 (that I might acquire mid July) body to the shortened frame. 3,000 is the goal and it will be challenging to get as close to that as possible.
