Boy am I embarrassed. I recently topped off (it took a goodly amount) the transfer case in my 2000 Mountaineer 4wd (not awd) with 75w-140 differential lubricant. Supposed to take Mercon tranny fluid. Woke up in the middle of the night with that sickly realization that all was not right...and this was done 1400 miles ago. What damage did I do?

i hate when that happens!

Have you drained it back out?

88vert,
Not as yet. I'm picking up the Mercon tranny fluid this evening and will drain/refill tomorrow. In the meantime I'm using one of our other cars. Boy, do I hate making screw-ups like this! Kinda' ruins a night's sleep.

I am by no means a expert, but I dont think it hurt anything:)

Thanks, 88vert. Need some reassurance right about now.

im no expert either. but it does raise a good question. do you have a manual or electronic t-case?

if its manual, why should the t-case oil be any difference that the diff oil? they are both gears not being shifted constintly or needing hydraulic properties like auto trannys need.

even if its electric, it should be the same. i dont think electrics shift the same as auto trannys do. instead of hydraulic lines, it looks like it uses and actual motor, so its just like shifting manually.

YOu didnt hurt anything.

hahaha careful next time! I would drain it, fill it with ATF< then drive it for an oil change or so, then drain and fill again........

I have woken up in the middle of the night MANY times while building my BII.........best solutions come in your sleep......eat sleep and dream Explorer's

Thanks, 410 fortune. Good suggestion to change the new fluid out while doing the next oil change...gets the residual alien oil out.

Tell you what... those middle of the night wake-ups sure hit with clarity when you've not done something you were supposed to or when you've done something wrong. This one hit somewhat late, like 1400 miles late.

maybe your not getting enough sleep then... :) good luck!

I know what you mean. I am in the middle of an engine swap and we drained the manual tranny and out came gear oil. I scratched my head and went hmmmm. That doesn't look right.

But my old 66 F-100 took gear oil in the tranny and it was a 3 spd manual.
