Yeah, 4.10s will hurt the gas mileage with stock tires. If you had 33's, then you'd probably get some better gas mileage.

Happy trails!!

I have 4.10s and 33s and my gas mileage is ok. I get 16 mpg on the highway and about the same on other roads.

i know I have 3.73 and not 4.10 but I only get about 11 and this tank is going to be like 6 or 7 from some reason? What the hellis going on with my X, oh and I have 33s

so i could get away with 33 no problem running 4.10s i'd just get a locker or good limited slip and it'd be dam good.

I think 12-14 mpg in the city and around 19 on the highway is about right. Mine is about the same and 14-16 mpg mix.

If you have 33's, you might want to get 4.10. That would help your mpg a lot.

yeah I want to get new gears but 4.10 or 4.56, I dont wheel but that is only a small jump to 4.10. either way I have no money so whatever. Which do you folks think is the best option as far as gears

thanks jaws, I have seen that a few time but I dont know. I dont know if it is worth 4.10s but at the same time I do plenty of highway so I dont know if 4.56 are right. I wish there was 4.27 for 4wd. And I know people will say 4.56 in case you go to 35s. I rub at 33, and the next lift I do will be a SAS but that will be after I get out of law school which Ihavent started yet so not for another 4 years at least

I know how that is. I am planning to do the SAS, but I'll also be going to vet school soon too.

haha vet school. I was suppose to do that. I am an animal science major but I couldnt take it so I am off to law school. I wish you luck and I hope you dont need too much of it.

4.10s and 33" tires will get you worse mileage than your stock 30" tires with 4.10s. At least it has on my '97 4x4 SOHC. See my post at Dead Link Removed for more details, but basically I got my best mileage with 31.7" tires and 4.10s. Next was stock 30" tires with my 4.10 and my worst mileage is with my 33" tires and 4.10. Performance sucks big time now, there is no bottom end and I now turn off OD until I am cruising at or above 55 MPH. If I don't the every time I touch the gas pedal my torque converter unlocks which generates heat which is detramental to a transmission.

If you are only getting 12-13 MPG in the city then something is wrong or you have a very heavy foot when taking off. I don't race away from every stoplight (some I do) but I definately take off quicker than the average vehicle next to me. My mileage is almost always about 16-16.5 city. Depending on which tires I had on, my highway mileage has been anywhere from 17.5-20 MPG. My Explorer doesn't fluctuate very much at all between city and highway mileage like my Wife's Sable does. She gets about 15 MPG city & 27 MPG highway. Mine only varies by about 3 MPG. Since you are getting 19 MPG on the highway, that at least implies that your engine is running properly since that is what mine was rated for on the highway. The low city mileage implies a lot of heavy foot take-offs. When you have the aerodynamics of a barn, your city and highway mileage shouldn't vary by that much.

Thank I am probably goign to regrear but not until the summer. Might go 4.56. I dont have a heavy foot most of the time, trying to save on gas. the 19 mpg was back in the stock days. now 33 with 3.73 is costing me. Probably would have saved money to just regear right off the bat. I dont get much change in mileage city vs. highway either 11-13 city 12-14highway. had a horrible two tanks about a month ago maybe a little less but seems like other from the new england did too, maybe agas thing ( I would rather that than my X have a problem). Thank for your help

Robert, do you wish you had gone with 4.56's? I am gonna regear soon with new 33"s and I am wondering if I should go with 4.10's or 4.56's keeping the life of my tranny and off roading as the number one objectives.

Actually I am going to 4.56s. My 4.10s are my stock gears. While I'm at it I will probably throw in a Powertrax Noslip front and rear.

not that I am likely to do it but how much do those powertrax go for front and rear.
Gary

Cheapest price I've found is $399 front and $435 rear. If I can get them installed for no more labor than they already charge me to change my gears then I'll probably get the no-slip in both ends (assuming Powertrax's part number for '95-'00 Explorers really works). If they charge me much more then I'll probably hold off and pick up just the rear and put it in myself and forget the front.

I wouldnt run a powertrax in the front end of a 97. the front axle is always engaged and i dont think it would handle very well on the road.
