the red wire is the one that is was attatched to

That looks like the plug on the coil pack.. If I remember correctly it goes to little metal thing that is actually on the coil pack bracket.. I think its called a "condensor".. and I think is actually a capacitor type thing..

Yup
Or "noise suppressor"

could that be the thing thats not allowing it to start

I wouldn't think so...

Have you figured out if your getting spark or fuel? That would help narrow down the issue.

im gettin spark...but now that I think about it....when i turn the key to the ON position..i dont hear the huming sound from the fuel pump that i usually hear

so i may not be getting fuel

did you change fuel filter, if you did did you turn the fuel switch back on underneath the dash? could it be a fuse issue?

fuel switch

I have a similiar problem. After running out of gas, my 91 Ranger will not start. I have spark and fuel pressure at the fuel filter. Any ideas?

Is there fuel pressure after the filter? You may have sucked up some trash from the bottom of the tank.

if you turn the key to on and dont hear the fuel pump prime then I would start by checking the fuel pump fuse and relay

the fuel pump relay is one of the most problematic pieces on the explorer

the wire/ plug you broke is for your coil pack condensor, you need to repair it, although I do not believe it would cause a no spark condition

fuel pump pressure

Yes there is pressure after th filter. Can anyone tell me what the pressure should be if I get the use of a pressure guage?
