'99 Explorer 5.0L
Okay, for months now I've been chasing an EGR-related CEL. I've narrowed it down to the DPFE sensor. I have a '99 5.0L. The DPFE has one of the older, aluminum casings.

I went to the local Pick-N-Pull today and yanked a DPFE off of a 96 or 97 Ranger 4-banger. My question is, will this sensor work on my '99 5.0L? Both sensors *look* identical and have the same plug type. I didn't know if these sensors were specific to each engine though.

It only cost $4, so if it won't work it's no big deal. AutoZone has the one for my truck for $40.

I was just wondering if anyone here knew the specifics of these sensors... for instance, if they are calibrated for certain engine sizes/EGR systems.

My understanding is this--
The egr sensor, or Differential Pressure Feedback Egr (DPFE) sensor just sees pressure, or none.
There is a reference line and a pressure line, with an orifice inside the egr tube.
The sensor should work--
Did you clean the egr valve and tube? If the sensor doesn't fix the problem, you might have a clog.

Don't forget to reset the PCM when you do replace the sensor. Just disconnect the battery before you start.

Let us know how it works please. Check the dpfe hoses real good for holes--

Um they are when I replaced mine the guy from the parts store, wanted to know what VIN # I had so it would be a correct fit if this helps.

It should work, I threw a old dpfe on my bosses car to save him a little cash that came off a wrecked t-bird 1996 model (he has a 2001 taurus) and it worked out fine. Some sensors are calibrated very precisely, however a dpfe is not one of them. I put them on daily and other then a few models Ford's replacement numbers are nearly all the same. Right now there are about 4 different dpfe's...
