Ok,

Here is a issue I have experienced. Anyone know what to do? On 3 different occasions I have started my vehicle, engaged the transmission, and started to pull away. After traveling just a short distance I pressed down on the accelerator attempting to gain speed, and the engine roared as if it were in neutral or park and I was just revving up the engine. The vehicle had lost all momentum/forward motion and it was as if the transmission had slipped or acted like it was unattached from the drive train. Immediately a large red #1 appeared in the message center. Within seconds of coasting the vehicle suddenly gained back power and seemed to operate as normal. Last Friday I had my vehicle in at the dealer to check this and they found very little wrong but said the had done some "updates" because of a stored code? So I left and drove about 3 blocks away to a local store and went inside. I was inside for about 15 minutes and when I attempted to drive off, the same thing happened. Engine roared loudly but I had no power to the wheels. This was just 15 minutes after leaving the dealer. So I took it back and they checked it again and again told me they found no problems. Anyone else experience this issue? If so, did they fix it and what was the fix?

Here is another thread that starts out discussing what sounds similar to the problem you're experiencing.

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=400727

The thread ends up talking about several different issues but initially sounds like your issue. Two possible culprits from my reading of the thread are faulty oxygen sensor or faulty throttle body, from the sounds of it. The CAC hose issue doesn't sound likely otherwise it would be acting like it had no power all the time.

I don't think the issues in the link are exactly the same as they mention 'hesitation' and 'stumble'. While the OP here definitely would have some hesitation, he has the engine roar which I don't believe is mentioned in the link. I wonder if the red #1 might be the gear selection indicator?

You probaly inadvertently put the transmission into "M" mode instead of "D" doing so the transmisson won't shift into second gear as it is expecting you to do so via the paddle shifters, then you bounce off the rev limiter and lose power. When I first got my sport I did this a few times, not sure why "D" is not all the way down instead of "M" in that position.

Hi bobbyks69,

Are there circumstances under which you can make this roaring noise happen? If so, it might be a good idea to do this while you have your tech in the Explorer with you. How many miles do you have on it?

Im telling you...this is the same issue I have had on 4 occasions. My dealer (who is excellent) said to bring it in (we know there will not be a CEL or code) but that they would record the issue and should it happen (even outside of warranty) they will cover it. See why I like these guys?

Crystal,

I am very concerned but glad to know that mine is not a isolated issue. It appears from this and other threads that it is a common problem. And no I do not know of any circumstance where I can recreate the problem and evidently the techs at my dealer can't do it either. After reading the other thread I remembered that on at least two occasions when I experienced the problem, it was raining and humidity was higher than normal. But the other day at the dealer it was only 13 degrees out and very dry. My dealer said that if it happened agsin I would need to bring it in and leave it for a entire day so they have time to get a Factory tech specialist in to look st it. And Crystal I have 18,000 miles on it.

Colder (sub 40 deg) and humid here too on each of the four occurances. Also when turning from minor road onto a major where you need to get up to say 45mph+. It happens within with the truck cold within 3 minutes of start up. I am not dogging the motor while it is cold or doing anything out of the ordinary.

Thanks for replying, bobbyks69. Let me know when you go back to the dealership and I'll get your regional customer service manager involved. I'll continue to check on this thread to see if you hear this noise again.
