Hey Guys,

Just wondering, did all Eddie Bauers come with 5.0L or was it an option? Just talking with a friend, got curious.

It was an option on any model of explorer.

Except XL/XLS if I'm not mistaken. It's rare to find an XLS with anything but 4.0 OHV from what I've seen, but I understand SOHC does exist in some XLS.

Personally, I've never seen 5.0 in anything but XLT/EB or Limited.

mine´s 2001 XLS with SOHC. i like it a lot.

Like I said, XLS does seem to have SOHC, but not nearly as common as OHV. The XLS was considered entry level in the last few years of the second generation and SOHC is obviously an upgrade. You'd be hardpressed to find a 5.0 in one though. I simply don't think they exist.

I looked at a lot of XLS when I entered into the 4 door world four years back (I had 3 Sports before that, one 1st gen and two 2nd gens). I like the exterior styling of the XLS (which looks almost like a 4 door Sport to me). I just wasn't prepared to go back to 4.0 OHV after driving two SOHC Sports (far superior engine, IMHO despite the timing chain issues which I had dealt with under warranty on my 2nd Sport).

Any way you slice it, once you have a V8, it's hard to go back. :) I've really learned to appreciate all the creature comforts in the EB as well. I have all options except air ride and rear back-up sensors (neither option appeals to me anyhow).

I could very well be in a SOHC XLS had one existed on a lot in Calgary when I was in the market. 5.0 equipped Explorers of any model were pretty rare when I was looking. Only Eddie Bauers seemed to be available. The odd Limited and hardly any XLT. It was this site that convinced me to go 5.0, more for rock solid reliability than pure power (the SOHC is no slouch as you know).

2000 was the last year for the ohv, so in 2001 the sohc, or v8 were the only 2 options.

If you ordered one you could get whatever motor you wanted in any explorer spec. But most of the higher end got the v8, or sohc, and the lower end got the ohv. I think it was probably due to cost of the engine.

Are you certain about that? I factory ordered two Explorers in the past and Ford is pretty restrictive about what you can order with what. I know there are odd exceptions out there (i.e. Briwayjones and his manual tranny in a newer 4 door), but I doubt a 5.0 w AWD ever made it into anything lower than XLT.

I'd love to be proven otherwise. :)

Good point. I forgot that they discontinued the OHV in '01.

OK, I was bored. Here are the standard engine specs for the entire 2nd generation (I probably got a few of these wrong, but as I suspected, 5.0 was only an option on XLT/EB and Ltd from 1996-2001 based on what I read all over the www):
