I hate egr valves! A few days after buying my explorer the check engine light came on. I scanned my computer and it said I had and still have a mal###tioning valve. I tried removing the old valve but the one of the bolts got rounded off. Then I tried getting it out with a bolt extractor but it fell somewhere behind the engine so I just said F it. Any ideas on how to get it out and is there a way to get it without removing other things around the valve?

V8 engine?

Which code(s) were displayed? Usually the egr valve is not the issue.

I would bet it is an issue with the DPFE sensor, or hoses.

You might need to remove the egr elbow from the upper intake plennum to get that bolt out. Or,
I have an extra elbow I could sell to you for like, 25.00 plus shipping. The gasket will need replacing also, order it from ford.

Yes it's a v8. I don't remember the actual code number but I do remember the description. It said egr valve flow insufficient. Can it be the sensor? I thought I was the valve. I heard from some people that valve goes out pretty early on explorers

You heard wrong. I have 220k on mine and it is still good.

Before doing anything you should have put a length of vaccum hose onto the nipple on the egr valve and sucked lightly. If the motor starts sputtering with light suction there's a good chance the valve itself is good.

As was said earlier, there's a better chance it's the DPFE than the EGR valve.

It may be as simple as a hole in one of those hoses going from the egr tube on the manifold, to the DPFE sensor. You really have to take them off and check them real good. You might find one has simply blown off.

If the hoses are good, chances are the dpfe has failed. You also might get a low egr flow code if there is a header leak. It is very common to find a cracked header , or, the egr tube itself can be leaking. This would sound like a ticking at load, especially when the engine is cold.

The valve may be bad, but I have never seen this to be the case. Apply vacuum to it and see if the diaphragm appears to be holding.

Turdle, I do hear a ticking sound. But also I also feel a slight jerking only during light loads around 30 mph.
