Electric compressors for on board air

Well, this is the next mod i'd like to have. I talked with a friend of mine in the shop up at the National Guard this week and he was talking about some compressors he runs for his air bags on his honda. He said they put out 250 psi. I asked him about the volume and he said it fills his tank at 250 psi in about 5 minutes. Has anyone used one of these? I don't even know where to begin to look for these, any ideas about this? Thanks.

I have a Vanair compressor that I got from Summit. I got the portible version (instead of the hard mount) since I haven't decided where I want to mount it yet. It will fill my 31's from 15psi to 30psi in about 3 minutes each. If you decide to hard mount yours and run an air tank you can cut the refill time alot.

For quick off road repairs or emergency use, get one of those cheap cigarette lighter ones from the auto department of most stores.

They are only 10 bucks or so, and they can inflate a tire in a couple of minutes. Be careful, though, since they are cheap, If you use it for too long it will start overheating.

The best bang for the buck seems to be teh truckair. they are about 40 bucks at wal mart. I have one and so does rangerx. they arent real fast but they work pretty good for the price. If you want to spend more there are the quickair units you can get from 4wheel parts or the new oaisis one that basically is a york ac compressor hooked to a modified starter motor but is like 700 bucks. Also I think cadalacs had a good small compressor that can be had cheap from junkyards.

I would NOT buy a 10 dollar cheapie. I have one that came with a road side kit. You have to let it sit 8 min or every 10 you run. It takes FOREVER. I never let it run more than 5 minutes at a time and it still burnt up in about 3-4 tire fillups. The only things these are good for is emergencies as a last resort.

Yeah, i wasn't going to by a cheapo, what i had in mind was what mrboyle has. I want something to hard mount so that i can run it to a tank for storage of air! Anyone else have any other kinds? Thanks!

Try a "TrailHead" unit, all depends on how deep your pockets are.

ARB is a good comprerssor but does not have a high volumne, (CFM) rating.

An air tank is a must, as stated before, really helps when trying to run an impact wrench or high volumne cutting tool.

Search the web for 12V air compressors, there are a lot out there.

Ask Rick about his...he has a really nice one hard mounted in his truck and I remember seeing it on a web page and it's not too expensive. I wish I had the web page but I lost my bookmarks when I reformatted my hd.. He got it from fly-n-hi so if you find their web site you could tool around and try to find it...

A classic low tech way

I have an old Ford air brake pressure pump on my boat that operates steam whistles for a festival I attend every couple of years. It would take about 5 minutes to fill the tank. This takes manifold vacuum and converts it into about 120 psi. A friend also uses this in his truck to operate an air horn. For an air tank he used a two foot section of 1 1/2 inch copper pipe. Practical? Maybe not, I just like how it slowly chuggs.

The model I have is the VAR-20023. It is the same as the VAR-20022, but is portible, not hard mount. If you decide to go with the 20023, don't order the inflation kit (VAR-00025), it comes with the 20023 compressor.

I have a VIAIR 400P and its great! Yes i should have got the hardmount one but it makes no difference. Can just yank off the battery connectors and use their onboard air hookup kit with their 2.5 to 5 gallon tank.
Call them up for a free catalog. Has everything in it.....

And you can air up all 4 tires at the same time! It even has a schraeder valve for standard service station type air chucks. On that you can put a Staun tire deflator and then deflate all 4 tires at the same from 30 to 18 PSI in about 4 minutes!

That's pretty cool stuff. I think the 100 series would be all i would need. And it's a good price, just about as much as i wanted to spend. I really wouldn't use this a bunch, but it would come in handy when i wanted it. That deflater stuff looks pretty cool. Good idea.

I was thinking of doing this too. Where were you going to mount that thing JoshC? I was thinking of when I get my new tires (33s) next week, the big spare won't fit so I could mount a compressor and a tank underneath in the back. The ad says they are sealed and water resistant but I wonder if a compressor could handle being underneath and exposed. Do you(JoshC) or anybody else know about this?

I would prefer a hard mount cuz I got too much crap floating around the inside of my truck already.

Most of them canbe mounted outside the truck, however it;s best to keep them under the hood or somewhere that they dont get dipped in water or splashed. I am getting ready to install my OBA setup soon, so I have been doing a ton of research. I have talked toa few guys who have ARB compressors going bad when they are mountd in a valnearable spot.
