Emergence Rear Diff Prob

my dad seem to think that it would be implosibal to swich the front we have a guy that was going to swich my axle for the junk yard one before we found out about the d4 and my 45 being a diffrent ratio, so the question is whats harder the rear or the front to do, i would love to do the 3.73 becase then i would have limited slip and the truck it came from was a 91 eb with like 79,000 mile that had a blown head or somthing

how did i blow this old one out anyhow i have never netrual droped it like alot of idiots do and i rairly go hard on it i do mudd it but i go easy on it

may i suggest you drive up to lima, Ohio, its about 40 miles north of you. Perry auto has a bazillion acres and have a butt load of explorers. If you come up tomorrow i could take you to the yards that i have been to. But saturday im leavin to vancouver in the mornin. Ill pm you the number of perry auto.

or what you could do is buy the 3.73 and then have the front end regeared to a 3.73. if its cheaper than buyin a different axle.

thanks alot for your help i am going to look in to the option of having it regeared first becase is would be real nice to have that working ls rear end insted of the open diff which drives me crazy but if i have to i will pm you and get that number
and i hope we finaly get some snow in are area so i can test the limited slip

they said tomorrow we're gonna get some but you know how the forecasters are,

yea they are almost always wrong around here i hope i can get this proble fixed then i will have my truck and be ready for the snow

dont know what your dad was talking about, the front end gear change is EASY. All it is is removing the axleshafts enough to unbolt the 3rd member then you just drop in the new one, instant gear changes. The rear is also simple, just take the u bolts off, disco the driveshaft and your set for the swap. A u=pull it junkyard shouldnt charge more than 300 for everything you need, much much less than simply having a shop regear your rearend.

Thank you Snoborder!!

The front pig on the D35 TTB UNBOLTS FROM THE BEAM.
Swapping the rear axle and front diff on your truck will likely be cheaper then fixing your rear end, and you gain a 3.73 ratio.

OR

You can have your rear end fixed, with new gears, seals, and bearings.
There are ALOT of drum brake 8.8 axles for Explorer's in the junk yards.
You can use one from all years, 95+ will have disc brakes (more $$$ in the junk yard)

if you can get the stuff from a 91 with 76k on it, jump on that, Its a rare find indeed, a 91 with low miles. However a 95 and up would be even better (for the rear ONLY) caus you can go to disks, and its newer. You cannot use a 95 and up front axle in a 1st gen, just in case you were wondering. (though 8.8's are very stout no matter how old) You only need the complete rear axle and the front pumpkin, your axleshafts and such in the front will work with the new pig. If you do manage to get your hands on a disk brake rear, you will also need the master clyinder from a 95 and up explorer. I believe thats all, someone correct me if im wrong.

BTW, i want to see what grenaded in your rear, please post pics. You can email them to me and Ill post them for you If you cant. Any more details on what was broken?

its at the shop ill try to get a pic but i can tell you the school parking lot looks funney theres a smal pond of axle grease and it smells horibal and everyone at my school loves it there like burning out in the puddle of axle grease i can try to get a pic of both

well whatever you do, for your sake, DIY this one. Dont let the shop work on it unless you arnt paying for it. The shop will charge alot more to regear than it would cost you to swap in the 3.73 pig and new rear.

You should clean that stuff up, not just let it sit there.
part of owning a car is being responsible for the fluids it leaks
just my 02

i did becase i couldent stand the smell of it and i dont like littering but i had to leave it there overnight

ok the rears in but i am thinking about doing the fron my self i have a new front diff, is that somting i can do my self i did the manual hub conversion thats about the farthest i have gone so can you give me tips on how to do it my haynes manual is worthless

Assuming that the new 3rd member has gears in it already....

easy, slide the axle shafts out a little (you will need a hub socket) unbolt the 3rd member, disconnect driveshaft, reconnect driveshaft to new 3rd member, apply new gasket seal, rebolt cover, reinstall axle shafts and fill with fluid. Its prolly easier than the manual hub conversion just try not to let the driveshaft overextend and come off.

If it dosent have gears and you are lookin to setup your own.... forget it. It can be done, but from what ive heard, the d35 TTB is one real PITA to do gears on for a professional, let alone a newbie. It would be so much cheaper to buy a new pig at a junkyard with gears in it already.

Oh, and when you say new new rear is in, did you DIY or did a shop do it. And what was done to it, new gears, new axle assembly?

got the one of the explorer at the junk yard not new but newer than my old one and i got the front as well just need to put it on

unfortitly my camera wasent working but the guy said that it was a detanation on the interal parts and i can tell you the gears were hanging out the back if the diff cover
ok new question have the new rear end installed its seams good but i hear you guys talking about limited slip cluches going bad and it acting like a open diff and that seems to be the case here it has like 100,000 miles or somting like that on the diff, how hard is it to change the cluches on that and heck is axle d4 limited slip i was told it was

Thanks alot guys sorry my camera wasent working i will try to get pics of it if i can

Get the axle under the truck and working. Then drive it 500 miles or so and take it to a gear shop to have the L/S rebuilt. OEM L/S lasts typically 65K miles.
However you can test its grip by getting both tires off the ground, and holding one, spinning the other.

But you can put the 8.8 under your truck, then get the front diff swapped out, then worry about gears and a new LS if you need it.
