Where is a cheap place to get an engine reader for a 1991 XLT 4.0 at and how much should I expect to spend? I am tired of paying $45 to get my codes read. I heard the older style like mine were cheaper..anyone know? Thanks in advance!

You don't need a code reader to pull most of the codes on a '91. To pull what are called fast codes, you need a scan tool. To pull all the codes except the fast codes, you jumper the Self Test Input Connector to the Signal Return Pin on the diagnostics connector located near the fuse block on the passenger's side fenderwell. How to do it?? I know it's here somewhere if you do a search, but you're better off buying a Haynes manual because it has the complete test procedure in it, and the codes.

The OBD I scanner makes life a lot simpler.

I heard somewhere they were under $50 for what I was looking for..so now im confused..who knows!

at autozone they pull your codes for free

http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html has the test procedure for pulling the codes like JDraper said. You can buy cheap code readers like you want that do the same thing only with plug in simplicity. Then you can buy the code readers like aldive is suggesting that not only pull the trouble codes, but will let you monitor sensors and such in real time.

JC Whitney has one for $32. Check your local auto parts stores, they shouldn't be too far off that price.

I picked up a scanner at Walmart for $25.00.

It's a code reader, but works very well WalMart, $25.
Had I known it worked on my 95 I would have gotten it sooner, instead I changed O2s, FPR, plugs, wires....
Still got CEL, bought reader, pointed directly to the DPFE, replaced...no more CEL..at least I should'nt have to R/R the emissions stuff for a while now...

Excuse me, I stand corrected.

I picked up a code READER at Walmart for $25.00.

Wuth these el cheapo code readers, can you use them to turn off the CEL?

Thanks....

AL, yes.
