Well crap......

Ok to start the story off the tranny started to slip on my mom one day on her way home slipped once and didnt do it again. We stopped her from driving and tore the tranny out and started the rebuild. New pump, torque converter, all clutch packs, servos, valuve body rebuild, and possibly other parts.(was not there during the entire build i was there for all the hard labor)

We suspected the torque converted was wrong when we got it from dayco. We called and ask a few questions. The old tc would spin on the tranny main shaft while the tranny was on the floor. We test fit the new tc and it would not spin on the tranny. We called and they said that this was right. So we went ahead and put it in. Got it all in and ready to fire up. Filled up the tranny the rest of the way with fluid and went to start.

HERE IS THE BIG PROB......When we first fired the engine over it would not roll over. Tried again. Same prob. Well the first thought was the batt being low and was just alive enough to make it budge. So i threw the jump pack on and it turned over. It did fire up and squeaked for about three seconds and then quit. Didnt think of anything of it at the time. It sounded like a belt tensionser pully.

Check the fluid before we dropped it into gear. It was full. Got in it and held the brake and put it in drive. Nothing. Then reverse....Nothing.....Then back in park and then right to low. NOTHING>>>>>>WHAT THE HECK....So the thought was better check the linkage on the valuve body just incase. Well pulled the pan and everything was good. Tranny was not even warm like it had run though the pump at all.

What is your thought on this prob?

We fill the converters before we put them in. That way there is no dry start on the tc. We ran it thought the gears and check it again. Still full.

When you say "wouldn't spin" what exactly do you mean? It must have spun for you to be able to attach the torque converter nuts (bolts) to the flexplate. Right?
It should spin freely. I've never seen a new torque converter that didn't.

The center shaft would not spin. The old tc and all the ones we have had for my old al4d would spin the center shaft. This one didnt.

My dad got that done. I spun there as i take it from him.

At this point, I think the first step is to drop the transmission and check out the torque converter.

Well you fill it up with it sitting on the floor. Then you very carefully tilt the tranny up and put the tc on. All about angles. Then you create a small plate to hold the tc on the tranny whlie you are putting it into place.

I do have a nice little tranny cradle for our jack so you can just slip it in with ease.

That process already got started. Pulled rear drive shaft and skid plate. Then stopped for the night. Its just bad timeing for this.

Quick question, once you got the torque converter properly seated into the bellhousing, were you able to rotate the torque converter easily with your hands?

Yes it was fine. We think the tc may actually be a little short and that there is a difference on how this one feels after seated.

I will have it out tonight. Only thing left is cooler lines and tranny bolts and dropping it down.

Help me here. I was reading about your problems getting it started and once you did keeping it running... and without more suddenly it sounds like you have the engine running and are putting it into gear without any response.... What I am I missing in between ? Did you get the engine to run and continue running somewhere along the way? If so what changed?

Well i already tore it down now and found the prob.

I would like to make myself a little more clear. What i meant by the shaft would not turn in the TC is this: with the TC laying on the floor you can incert the main shaft down in the TC and it should spin. This TC would not allow you to do this.

Glacier991 at first the engine would not turn over. Starter tried but it couldnt turn it over. Addition to the jump box must have gave it more power. It turned over and shut right off. Making a nice squealing noise. Third attemp started and made noise for a second. After that there was no responce in any gear while it was started.

After removal of everything we found a TC that was all scratched up arond the part the tranny shaft goes in. The pump was also messed up.

Yeah thats what we are thinking. It is the wrong converter. It seemes a little smaller that the correct one.
