I'd like to buy an extra (have 2, want 3 total) smart key for the new Limited. How much will these cost at the dealership? Will it require programming from the dealership? Thanks.

I looked on the Ford parts web site, and they do not list one, yet.

If it's anything like the remote fobs, you will get it 90% cheaper on ebay in a few months if they can be self programmed.

Hey Bill. From all the posts I've read on the Toyotanation Forum, these keys are not cheap. Some may be available on the Internet but I'm assuming that no matter where you get it, it would have to be programmed. Not sure if the dealer is the only one that can do it though. If these keys were not matched to your vehicle, then they would be able to open any other vehicle with a smart key setup. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
I see you are in the Chicago area, if I send you my VIN, do you think you could run down to the factory to check on my EX??? :D Take care

Dealer's parts department said the key will run about $136. And requires programming.

I checked on your new EX. There's been a little problem. It fell of of a lift.:( They are repairing it now, and will be done soon.:) Guy said, "It would not just 'buff' out", so it was taking a little longer than expected.:p:

LOL.... could be worse. Mine was scheduled to be built the day after New Years. Problem was, they started the assembly line up running backwards. It started out as a complete car but is now in pieces at the "end" of the line! :)

Lost Key Fob

I already lost one of the keyless fobs for my 2012 Explorer. I am curious about the cost of a replacement and also wondering if the aftermarket has equivalents available. Any ideas or inputs?

My dealer said they run about $200.

Costs more like $135. Then reprogram both keys per owner's manual.

Problem is you need two programmed keys to program another one. You only get two with the new car.

Best insurance I have found is buy a new OEM Blank as soon as possible and program as a 3rd key yourself. Total cost $75 for the OEM blank on E-bay.

Then if and when you loose one, you still have two keys to program another new one.

As long as you have only one key, it is a dealer job and costs accordingly.

May be he has a push button start

It is true you cannot self program a new fob unless you have two others functioning. I recommend buying a blank one somewhere other than the dealer and then taking it with your car to the dealer for programming. I had to do this when I bought my Mustang and it only came with one fob.

I want to acquire a third Securilock key for my 2013 Ford Explorer LTD. Dealers are quoting $120 to $185 for a new 5-button Securilock key and $75 to $170 to program it.

Obviously I'll program the key myself.

I've looked at blank 5-button Securilock keys on eBay. New ones are about $100 and used ones are about $70. But I noticed that there are sellers suggesting that an old Ford transponder key (similar to what I had on my 2007 Ford Explorer) can be used in place of the 5-button Securilock key. Obviously I would not have the 5-button remote functions... but, I can acquire one of these old keys for around $20. This would be sufficient as a back-up key in case we lost one of our original keys.

Has anyone done something like that? Will it work?

Thanks...

I added two 5 button remotes with a couple of Lincoln 5 button ones, I haven't heard about the older key fobs working with a current model Explorer. I also have a 13 Explorer LTD.

Welcome to the Forum truerock. :wavey:
I guessing that you are referring to what we commonly call the key fob for the push button start and remote entry.
If that is the case, don't forget that you will still have to get the key blade cut to match your existing ones.
I know that this has been discussed before and there are posts on it. You can try using the forums 'Search' function to locate them.
Good luck.

Cost of keys?

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know the cost of replacement keys? I was wondering if anyone was aware as my hubby thought he lost his set to the Explorer. It turns out they were left at the car wash, and now we have picked them up.

I am happy that the keys were located however- talk about an eye opening experience.

I am assuming you have the fob and push button start. The FOB's range from 40-80 on ebay. Programming can cost you about 60 if you go to a dealer. Sometimes they just do it for free.

- You should be careful to get the correct fob
- Uncut manual key. The ones on ebay sometimes come with a cut key which will not work with yours. So get one with an uncut blank.

I am sure others will chime in with additional info. Last thing you wanna do is go to a dealer for a new FOB they will charge you $500 (exaggerating a bit) but they will fleece you.

Thank you....this helps!
