My Ex doesn't have remote start but I'm looking to have it done. I only have 1 key so I know the dealer will have to program at least the first key. A lot of folks use Ebay keys and haven't had issues. Just make sure you get the correct bit key. The link you have here should work fine. If you have the power lift gate option, they also make the 5 button key to accommodate that as well.

I believe you bought the Explorer as a used vehicle. If so, I would have asked the dealer for a second set of keys if they only provided one. Also, if that is the case, I'd wonder who is running around with the 2nd set that they all come with?

In this area, the dealer is required by law to give you 2 sets of keys when you take over the vehicle.

Would the flip key from a Fusion work on the Explorer? I've seen a few of those for a bit cheaper than the Explorer key and would like not having the actual key exposed in my pocket.

I lost my spare keys last week and I have a couple questions-

1. Is it best to order through ford or can I get from another vendor (amazon, ebay, etc)
2. If I buy a fob off of Ebay can I program myself?
3. Will any locksmith be able to copy my existing keys ridges into new blank key?

You can order off eBay or amazon.

If you lost your spare, the dealer must program it.

And any locksmith should be able to copy/cut it.

I recently purchased a 2011 that only came with one IA key. Had the dealer later program a second key for me. It was $290 total. Should have thought about working into the deal when I bought the car.

That probably means that there is a IA keyfob out there some where that can still be used on your vehicle.

It requires 2 keys to program some number of spare keys. The Autonation dealer was nice enough to program it at no cost. The keys cost me around $36 if I remember it right.

Do you realize that the post you replied to is 5 1/2 years old?
The Manual tells you that 2 original keys are required to program any others. Did you only have just the one?

I would like to get a replacement just like what came from the factory. Fob has 5 buttons on it, lock, unlock, panic, rear door, remote start.
What is the best and cheapest route to accomplish this? Also is a key available without the fob included?
My vehicle supposedly has a pass code to unlock the doors, is this reliable?

You can contact them and speak with Mike in parts. They do the cutting for free if you have your key card with the 4 or 5 digit code if you want the door one. You will have to have a dealer program the key since you do not have 2 copies (required to do it yourself).

Welcome to the Forum Brian.
By "pass code" I'm guessing you are referring to the Securicode keypad on the driver's door. It is reliable. Do you have the code? If not it is located up above the emergency (parking) brake area. You will have to remove a cover under the dash. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums...or-code-securicode.366843/page-2#post-2866271
That code should work unless the previous owner changed it.
What kind of keyfob do you have? Is it the regular IA Keyhead? Not sure if the XLT has the IA keyfob.

Yep, see here. The only thing I've done additionally to that is to order some new transponder chips for those keys as the car is showing some warning message for 5s at ignition start, other than that they work flawlessly. But I guess maybe it depends on the year/fob style etc.

Some members have bought them off eBay or Amazon. Just make sure they are the correct frequency (315MHz).
