How can I get a factory PCM update for a 99 Ranger with 5r55e? I have a laptop and wanted to do this on my own. Does anyone know if this is possible? And if so, how do I go about doing it?

Thanks

What do you mean update?
Is there a problem?

You can hook up a scan tool and monitor the system, but adjustments are limited.
Ford Dealers will typically try to sell you an "updated" PCM for your truck IF there are in fact updates for your 99 PCM. In the past I have found that getting a new computer from the dealer is not always the best option, many of the revised tune they sell will retard timing, produce better efficiency but not as much power.
Junk yards are a good source for used PCM's.

But what do you think is wrong with yours? Do you have a check light?

I think he was talking about flashing it. There are special tools that are made for this purpose. They reprogram it certain variables. There is an ad here about the XCalibrator. This gives you a choice about a few different patterns that could be reprogrammed.

I was talking about flashing it with a Laptop. I know there are free programs out there but which is a good one? I would happily take the Ford update if I could find it.

Thanks

I am unaware of any third party "full flash" upgrade programmers out there. I *believe* you will need the NGS Star tester to take control of the PCM and upload the latest upgrades. As for the upgrades - They are out there - in fact I have them on CD, but they are NOT free by any means - at least not that *I* have found.

Hmmm, how much for a CD? or where can I get a CD?

We use a laptop and software to program ford, gm, and chryslers. I do not know what the software is - but it's very expensive  And very dangerous for the DIY. You can fry your computer quickly.
