I'm planning on taking my 99 mounty to the drag strip tonight (in Racine, WI). I've never done this before, but I'm excited. I just hope I don't get too disappointed with the results.

Anyone know around what time my quarter mile would be?

Well, we'll see what an intake, exhaust, chip, and tranny shift kit will do with a 5.0 awd.

I'll post pics and movies later tonight.

Btw, does anyone have any tips on how to get the best quarter mile run? I'm removing the spare, and plan to do just stomp on my accelerator.

Just put your foot on the gas and brake at the same time and hold the RPMs at about 2800. Also, stage deep, meaning that you should just barely tick the second staging light on. You should run a real low 16, and above all else have a good time.

In addition to removing the spare, remove anything else that you can ( jack, tools, etc ) and only have an 1/8 or less of a tank of gas.

Good luck and don't red light.

Good advice, except I would only powerbrake to about 2400. Remember to turn your AC completely off (a rule at most tracks), and open your hood between runs.

Thanks for the advices!

I didn't think about leaving my hood open in between runs... that's a smart idea.

A friend I know recommended that I don't do too many runs, as it may damage the vehicle. So how many runs should I limit myself too?

you're not gonna hurt anything by doing too many runs. its a (basically) stock truck... there is nothing under that much stress.

you should run a low low 16 maybe a 15.9. mine ran a 15.9-something with a catback, cut airbox, throttle cable mod, and no nitrous. on the spray my best was a 15.25.

i would brakestall it to about 2200-2400, then stomp the **** out of it when you see the yellow light go off. remove as much useless weight as possible, and only run a 1/4-1/8th tank of gas.

The last time I went to the track I felt like I was gonna break something. The track was very very very sticky which was causing problems with my limited slip and was probably binding the Ujoints. If after a couple of runs you feel the track is too sticky, stop running.

Ahh, all these people replying that have done engine work and had superchargers dont know what they are talking about. Go up to the line put it in neutral, rev up to 5 grand and when the light turns green slam that puppy in drive. Hell, your transmission will probably beat you down the track. Of coarse I am just messing around with you. My real question is, is there anyone you are going to go up against or are you just runnung it fir fun? No braggin rights involved in this one?

the results

Well, 4 hours at the drag strip, and I got to do 4 runs.

The quarter mile times goes: 17.594, 17.405, 17.240, 17.186.

My best quarter mile was 17.186 @ 78.67 mph. 60' was 2.368, 1/8 was 10.993 @ 63.36 mph. I was a bit disappointed with the results, but oh well. I can now say that I've taken my mounty to the track.

Those who claimed 15s and 16s for the quarter mile for 5.0 awd --- are you serious!? Because low 17s was all I could do. I drove w/ O/D OFF, and even with the shift kit at stage 3 + Apten, I thought the shift was not that firm.

There was a Dodge pickup truck with a 360ci n/a motor running high 12s, low 13s. When I asked him how much he invested, he said around 5 grand. I thought, man -- that's a whole lot cheaper than what Troll cost to build.

Jeff - next time I go, I'll definitely let you know. Let me know if you ever decide to go -- lets go together sometime.

17 seconds?! Damn. I guess it's time to mod it up, right?

Did you get the pics/movies??

troll will probably run 10s..... and 3 seconds is A LOT in the drag racing world.... Troll was also built, not bought....... things are cheaper when you do your own work, instead of paying someone else to do it....

17's? thats slow.. what was yor reaction time?

Mike.. do you know any other AWDs that have been to the track?

im not AWD, im 2WD. and a 17-something means something HAS to be amiss. do you have like 1000lbs. of stereo or something? big tires and a lift? most OHV V6's run low 17's...

I would think something was wrong. From what I understand a stock v6 SOHC should be in the 16's.

Is the mounty a bit heavier than the Ex?

Axle ratio?

Did you lower the tire pressure any? for better traction, gear ratio?

Same Weight. Also, traction would not be an issue with AWD.

My reaction times were less than 1 sec... around .6 sec or so.

I went with a 2002 Subaru WRX, a 2002 Acura TL-TypeS, and a 2002 Toyota Matrix.

Not sure if anyone cares, but the WRX got a best of 14.8 sec, TL-S got a best of 15.2 sec, and the Matrix got a best of 16.2 sec. I was stuck with low 17s.

When you're drag racing, all you do is powerbrake, then stomp on the gas throughout the strip? I'm still trying to figure out what I did wrong. Because I was honestly expecting somewhere in the 16s.
